1
Visual Arts
Definition: Visual arts encompass a wide range of artistic expressions that appeal to the eyes.
Examples:
Painting
Artists use a variety of paint mediums, such as oils, acrylics, or watercolours, as well as different application techniques to create a unique
piece of art. Their choice of paint medium, as well as application technique, will depend on the type of painting they wish to create – a mural
will be created in a very different way to an illuminated manuscript.

Photography
Their aim was to create images of beauty rather than images that were factually accurate. This has remained the goal of many fine art
photographers, who use a variety of interesting techniques to bend light, change focus, and create multiple exposures, resulting in unique
pieces of art.

Drawing
Many artists use drawing to explore their ideas and plan their projects, whilst others create art solely through drawing. And drawing doesn’t
always have to involve a pencil! Pens, graphite, crayons, charcoal, and chalk are just some of the mediums that can be used to draw.

Graffiti and Street Art:

Nairobi has a growing street art scene. Graffiti artists use public spaces to convey social and political messages, showcase creativity, and
transform urban environments.

Applied Arts
Definition: Applied arts involve the application of artistic design to functional objects

Examples:
Fashion Design:
Fashion design is a creative discipline that involves conceptualizing, sketching, and producing clothing and accessories. Fashion designers
meticulously blend artistic expression with functionality, considering fabric choices, garment construction, and overall aesthetics. Each piece is
a wearable art form, reflecting the designer's vision and responding to cultural trends, individual style, and practical considerations.

Architectural Design:
Architectural design is the artistic and technical process of conceptualizing, planning, and creating buildings and structures. Architects consider
aesthetics, spatial relationships, and functionality to design spaces that harmonize with their surroundings. Architectural designs can range
from residential homes to iconic skyscrapers, reflecting the architect's vision, cultural influences, and practical considerations.

Automotive Design:
Automotive design is the process of conceptualizing and creating the visual and functional aspects of vehicles. Automotive designers integrate
aesthetics, aerodynamics, and user experience to shape the exterior and interior of automobiles. From concept cars to production models,
automotive design influences the look, feel, and performance of vehicles, showcasing the marriage of artistic creativity and engineering
precision.

Ceramics and Pottery:

Ceramics and pottery involve the art of shaping clay into functional and decorative objects through techniques such as wheel throwing, hand
building, and glazing. Ceramic artists create vessels, dinnerware, and sculptural pieces that go beyond mere utility, incorporating unique
designs, textures, and glazes. Each piece is a testament to the artist's skill, creativity, and the transformative power of fire .

use their bodies or voices to convey artistic expression.

Examples:
Circus Arts:
Circus arts are a spectacle of physical prowess and artistic expression that encompass a variety of performances, including acrobatics, juggling,
clowning, and aerial acts. Under the iconic circus tent, artists defy gravity, display precision, and captivate audiences with their daring feats.
The circus is a celebration of skill, imagination, and entertainment, offering a magical escape into a world of wonder and spectacle.
Street Performances:
Description: Street performances are dynamic and informal expressions of art that take place in public spaces, ranging from bustling urban
squares to quiet street corners. Artists, whether musicians, living statues, or performers, engage with passersby, creating a unique and
accessible form of entertainment. Street performances contribute to the vibrancy of public spaces, inviting spontaneous interaction and
adding a touch of artistry to everyday life.

Stand-up Comedy:
Stand-up comedy is an intimate and immediate form of entertainment where a solo comedian takes the stage to share humorous anecdotes,
observations, and reflections. With a microphone as their sole prop, comedians navigate the terrain of life, culture, and personal experiences,
connecting with the audience through laughter. The art lies in the timing, delivery, and relatability of the comedic material, creating a shared
experience of joy and amusement.

Musical Theatre:
Musical theatre is a captivating fusion of acting, singing, and dancing, creating a dynamic narrative enriched by musical compositions. It brings
stories to life with a combination of scripted dialogue, vocal performances, and choreographed movement. The genre spans a wide range of
styles, from classic Broadway musicals to contemporary productions, offering a vibrant and entertaining experience that engages both the
senses and emotions of the audience.

Satire:
Satire, the sharp-edged tool of humor and critique, enables writers to lampoon societal issues, human follies, and the absurdities of
contemporary life. Through wit, irony, and exaggeration, satire becomes a means of highlighting societal shortcomings, prompting reflection,
and challenging established norms with a comedic touch.

Short Stories:
Short stories, concise narratives within the literary landscape, encapsulate complete tales within a limited space. They demand precision and
economy of language, offering readers a distilled yet impactful experience. Short stories often excel in capturing singular moments or exploring
themes with brevity, providing literary snapshots that linger in the reader's imagination.

Essay:
Essays, the intellectual landscapes of writers, are exploratory journeys into specific topics or ideas. They provide a platform for authors to
express their perspectives, insights, and analyses in a format that combines intellectual rigor with literary finesse. Essays can be illuminating
windows into the author's mind, encouraging readers to engage critically with ideas and prompting thoughtful reflection.
Poetry:
Poetry, the distilled essence of language, is a form of written art that transcends conventional prose. It weaves emotions, thoughts, and
observations into a tapestry of rhythm and metaphor, offering readers a unique experience of linguistic beauty. Through its brevity and
intensity, poetry captures moments, sentiments, and the ineffable aspects of the human condition, inviting readers to contemplate the
nuances of language and emotion.
