Example 1
1. TREE HEIGHT Carrie is told that a tree is 17 meters high. If the
angle from where she is standing to the top of the tree is 53°,
how far from the tree is she standing? Round your answer to
the nearest tenth.

2. COURTHOUSE CLOCK Penny can see the clock on the top of her town’s
courthouse from her front yard. The clock is at a horizontal distance of 140
meters from her house. If the angle of elevation from where she stands in
her yard to the clock is 15°, what is the elevation of the clock if her eye level
is 1.6 meters above the ground? Round your answer to the nearest tenth.

Example 2
3. BRIDGE VIEW Two teenagers are standing on a 28-meter-
high walking bridge and see a boat coming down the river
toward the bridge. The angle of depression formed by the
teenagers’ horizontal line of sight and their line of sight to
the front of the boat is 21°. If the teenagers’ horizontal
line of sight is 1.8 meters above the bridge, how far away
from the bridge is the front of the boat? Round your
answer to the nearest tenth.

4. HOT-AIR BALLOON A hot-air balloon is 7800 feet above a highway

intersection. The distance from the intersection to the balloon’s destination is
3.4 miles. What is the angle of depression between the balloon and its
destination? Round to the nearest degree.

5. RADIO TOWER The angle from the ground to the top of a radio
tower is 56°. At a point 170 feet farther back, the angle from the
ground to the top of the tower is 39°. How far is the first point
from the base of the tower? Round your answer to the nearest
tenth.

6. INDIRECT MEASUREMENT Bart is standing on a balcony that is 62 feet

above the ground and sees two cars in the parking lot below. If his line of
sight is 6 feet above the balcony and the angles of depression to the cars
are 72° and 57°, how far apart are the cars? Round your answer to the
nearest tenth.

Example 4
RAMPS A 60-foot ramp rises from the first floor to the second floor of a parking garage. The ramp makes a 15° angle
with the ground. How high above the first floor is the second floor? Express your answer to the nearest tenth of a foot
