PROBLEM STATEMENT:

You are given a four-bar linkage below (not drawn to scale):

Using the numbers in your ID Number, example 19-5489-183, to determine the length of
each link in inch.

Link 𝑄2 𝐴 = Sum of first and second number = 1 + 9 = 10 inches

Link 𝐴𝐵 = Sum of the third and fourth number = 5 + 4 = 9 inches
Link 𝑄4 𝐵 = Sum of the fifth and sixth number = 8 + 9 = 17 inches
Link 𝑄2 𝑄4 = Sum of the seventh and eight number = 1 + 8 = 9 inches

The grounded link is 1 and 𝑄2 𝐴 turns 100 rpm counterclockwise.

Determine the following:
a. Determine the Grashof condition (Grashof, Non-Grashof, Special-case Grashof).
Which link will most likely oscillate? Rotate fully?
b. Verify your answer in (a) by graphing the path of points A and B, determine the
extreme positions of the center line 𝑄4 𝐵 and 𝑄2 𝐴. For your graph, use proper
scaling.
c. Determine which link is fixed, crank, coupler, and rocker arm (if any).
d. Determine the velocity, 𝑉𝑎
