Insight Paper Day 1

Learning is a part of our everyday lives. Humans, animals, and even some
machines possess the ability to learn. Learning is the process of acquiring new
understanding, knowledge, behaviors, skills, values, attitudes, and preferences. That is
why I expected to learn new things during the conference and open my mind and eyes
to new topics. Furthermore, it gave me new topics that made me interested like the 3 rd
speaker on day 1 that talked about critical social justice: an existential threat to therapy,
however, I was dejected that I could not hear her properly because of technical
difficulties. If given another chance I would gladly listen to her again.

Aside from the 3rd speaker, I was also hooked on the 1st speaker, which was
about the curriculum. It talked about how student workload gives stress to the students,
which, from my perspective as a student, is accurate. Workload is the amount of time
required by a student to efficiently learn a curriculum and complete course activities.
The workload includes both scheduled activities and study time outside of class
(reading, preparation, report writing, reflection, exams, and so on). The researcher
believed that the ideal workload should not be more than 65 hours a week. Which for
me, is quite achievable. Schools want to be the best, so there are instances when
students would be overloaded with workload. However, the teachers are not thinking
about the non-contact time, which is also under student workload. The time that each
student gives to study for a quiz or even pass an assignment is part of the student's
workload. That is why teachers should reflect and check if the outcomes are achieved
or exhibited at the end of the course. Overall, the speaker was great at presenting and
answering the questions asked by the audience, you can clearly see that they were
knowledgeable about their own topic.
Psychology is the scientific study of the human mind and its functions, especially
those affecting behavior in a given context. Now, during the conference, the 3 rd speaker
talked about how student workload causes stress for the students. Academic stress, as
research shows, leads to less well-being and an increased likelihood of developing
anxiety or depression. Additionally, students who have academic stress tend to do
poorly in school. This indicates that stress could affect the brain, which in turn would
affect how we think.
