American Psychology",
identified various
components of the Empirical
self, one of which is what he
called a Material Self.
 MATERIAL SELF
- refers to the tangible elements of the self.
In James’ idea of the Material Self, one defines
themselves and at the same time is being defined
by the people they are acquainted with along with
the accumulation of objects and achievements
that a person acquired from the different
endeavors and experiences in life.

B ODY
The body is the innermost part
of the material self in each of
us; and certain parts of the
body seem more intimately
ours than the rest.
C LOTHES
The clothes we wear bring sensations to the
body which we directly affects our attitude
and behavior. Clothings is a form of self-
expression. We choose and wear clothes that
reflect our self.
I MMEDIATE FAMILY
Our parents and siblings hold great important
part of our self. What they do or become affects
us. When an immediate family dies, part of our
self dies too. When their lives are in success, we
feel their victories as if we are the one holding
the trophy.
H OME
Home is where our heart is. It is the earliest
nest of our selfhood. Our experiences inside
the home were marked on particular parts
and things in our home.
