Evaluate the extent to which Machine Learning technology has an effect on

Facebook and 3M in order to explain the suitability of Machine Learning in

different industries.

写 question

Hello Linsiman Li, in this era of artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning technology (MLT),
as the core of AI, has become the most cutting-edge technology. Since MLT has been proved by
scientific research that it can bring huge benefits to enterprises, more and more companies in
different industries are scrambling to apply MLT to their business and the facts show that some
companies do get expected profit from it. But should MLT really be used by all companies?

Today I’ m going to talk about the suitability of MLT. Firstly, I will evaluate the effect of MLT on
Facebook. Next, the impact of MLT on 3M company in manufacturing will be assessed. Finally, I
will give a conclusion about the suitability of MLT.

The internet business like Facebook, MLT can bring positive effect on it. Among the many roles of
MLT, it is hard to ignore its process of writing programs in python, and then programs can learn
and make decisions automatically like humans (Kaur et al., 2021).
Facebook used MLT to create an intelligent information push function to the software. After the
permit of users, it can collect possible browsing data to analyze the user's preferences, and then
automatically display the user's favorite content on the main page (Hazelwood et al., 2018).
This suggests that this function may help users reduce the time for information search to a certain
extent, improve the browsing efficiency of users, and offer a better user experience to meet the
users’ satisfaction.
the research by Dixon (2022) indicates that the annual revenue of Facebook rose dramatically
from 2009 to 2021 and peaked at 117 billion in the last year which seems to be highest of any
internet company. The results of this statistics suggest that the massive profits which Facebook got
every year show its dominance in the industry.
In brief, by using MLT to improve functions of its application, Facebook has successfully
dominated the market of internet and gained great profits.

While MLT can certainly benefit many companies, should it be used by all companies in all
industries? The answer is that it will still cause some companies to lose money.

For instance, compared with Facebook of new industry, MLT have a negative impact on the
manufacturing process for 3M of traditional manufacturing industry.
3M used MLT to create an expert decision-making system for their manufacturing division and the
major purpose was to help its manufacturing process make a series of decisions and some accurate
predictions. This system seems to be able to assist manufacturing process in offering more reliable
decisions to sharply shorten the workflows and achieve higher efficiency. However, for some
reason, this system failed to bring expected benefits to 3M. Among many causes, it is hard to
ignore the workflows structure of 3M. Like most other manufacturing companies, 3M uses
waterfall models to structure its workflows. One of the characteristics of waterfall model is that
compared with flexible agile model, it has extremely linear and fixed structure (Weedmark, 2019).
Almost of their manufacturing work only needs to be carried out step by step according to an
assembly line. This means that this expert system may not provide effective assistance in decision-
making during the manufacturing process to some extent. Therefore, because of the high cost of
using MLT, the cost is likely to be far greater than the profit it brings, which leads to huge losses.

In conclusion, MLT cannot bring benefits to all enterprises and industries as people say now.
Because of the high cost of using MLT, it is still a double-edged sword for enterprises. It also has a
scope of suitability to the industry and conditions for its use. From the above analysis, compared
with the traditional manufacturing enterprises with stable structure, MLT is more suitable for those
new industries with flexible structure that require continuous innovation, such as the Internet
industry.
