X. Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C or D on your answer sheet to indicate
the correct answer in each of the following questions.
SLEEPING IN SPACE
Sleeping in space is different from sleeping on Earth. There is almost no gravity in space, so
your body can float around. You don't need a soft bed because your body doesn't rest on the bed. It
floats a little bit above it. You don't get tired of sleeping on your back or your side because you are
really sleeping on air. Astronauts can sleep in special sleeping compartments, or they can sleep in
sleeping bags. The sleeping bags are attached to the walls. Astronauts can don eyeshades to block
out the light and carplugs to block out noise. That's something that some people on Earth do, too.
Astronauts are scheduled for eight hours of sleep every day. That's the same amount of sleep
that most adults on Earth require. Astronaut Eileen Collins explains, "As far as sleeping you can
sleep anywhere you want in the orbiter. Usually you look for a place that's quiet. We talk among
ourselves as to who's going to sleep where, and on both of my flights I selected to sleep in the mid
deck with my head close enough to the stairs so that I could go up to the flight deck immediately if
there were a problem. I find that to be a rather quiet place. You've got the fans going. I sleep very
well in space. We're scheduled for eight hours' sleep, although I don't usually sleep the whole time.
I find it very easy to sleep in space. You don't have any pressure points. You don't have to roll
around-going to your right side and then to your left side - sleeping in space is very comfortable.
Eileen Collins is lucky. Most astronauts don't sleep well in space.
