1. In your personal thought, beside from Dr. Jose Rizal and Andres Bonifacio, who
amongst our national heroes who practiced being nationalist and patriotic, and why?
I think Emilio Aguinaldo is one of the national heroes who represents nationalism and
patriotism, along with Dr. Jose Rizal and Andres Bonifacio. We know that Emilio Aguinaldo is a
leader and a Filipino politician who played an important part in the country, especially when he
fought against Spanish to obtain or achieve the freedom of the Philippines, and after this
happened, he also led the Philippines-American War against U.S resistance to Philippine
Independence. He founded the Revolutionary Government established on June 23, 1898,
wherein his goal was to bring about change in the country, especially in the political system,
rules, and regulations, to improve the outcome for the Philippines. Emilio Aguinaldo retained as
the highest political official in which he was called the “President”, because of his excellence as
a leader in this country, the Philippines gained independence from the nations that colonized us.
On June 12, 1898, in Kawit, Cavite, he declared Philippine independence. Aguinaldo worked to
unite various revolutionary groups, establish a government, and lead military actions against
foreign forces, showcasing his commitment to nationalism and patriotism.
So, I can say that Emilio Aguinaldo is one of the national heroes who represents nationalism
and patriotism because of his excellence in leadership that showcased the beauty of our country
and made significant contributions for its improvement.
2. In your opinion, what is the advantage or benefits of Character Formation: Nationalism
and Patriotism for Criminology students?
For students studying criminology, character development which emphasizes nationalism
and patriotism is important because it encourages a feeling of responsibility towards society,
ethical conduct, and a commitment to having fairness in the country. For criminology students,
understanding and upholding these principles can expand their knowledge of how individuals
can contribute to the broader and faster progress of the country. They can be further
encouraged to act or participate in improving a community by showing small acts of kindness or
engaging in positive deeds. An example of this is participating in a community activity known as
"general cleaning" because it demonstrates your love for a community. By keeping our
community clean and organize, we show love for our environment. And, fostering unity ensures
the continuous protection of people, preventing undesirable occurrences. This perspective can
improve their sense of empathy and awareness of different societal issues, which is critical for
addressing the root causes of criminal activity. Patriotic criminology students are more inclined
to approach their job with honesty, emphasizing the importance of protecting the legal system
and the rights of citizens.
To summarize, emphasizing nationalism and patriotism in character development gives
criminology students a solid ethical foundation while also growing a sense of community.
3. If you were given a chance to amend the RA 8491, what should it be and why?
The Flag and Heraldic Code of the Philippines, Republic Act 8491, lays down guidelines for
the proper use and display of the national flag, anthem, motto, coat-of-arms, and other heraldic
items. If I were given the chance to amend or modify this legislation, I would include additional
information particularly for schools, aimed at providing students with knowledge about what
nationalism entails, the significance of the national flag, and the symbols it represents. This
would help students understand and appreciate the importance of national identity. I would also
create Rules & Regulations to raise awareness, especially among students, regarding what
should be avoided when it comes to the national flag and the proper handling and display
protocols. We can also have additional national celebrations or a campaign emphasizing the
importance of the national flag and other heraldic objects, along with their history and values.
This could provide more knowledge and further aid our understanding of just how significant the
national flag truly is.
In summary, this would improve understanding, particularly among students, of the
significance of the national flag and other heraldic objects, including their historical
background and values. These legislative amendments would result in greater understanding
and unity among all individuals involved.
