ACTIVITY 2 (LESSON 2)
Answer the following questions briefly.
A. The First Voyage Around the World by Ferdinand Magellan – by Antonio Pigafetta

1. What was the purpose of the voyage of Magellan?

The goal of Magellan's trip was to locate a route through South America to
the Moluccas and return to Spain with a cargo of spices. However, at this point in
the journey, Magellan seems to have developed a zeal for converting the indigenous
tribes to Christianity.

2. What were the reasons for their stay in the island?

One of the reasons was to find a new marine route to the spice islands that
did not violate Spain's pact with Portugal. Their time in the Philippines was
characterized by friendliness and a friendly trade of products.

3. How did Pigafetta describe the natives of the island?

He portrayed the physical appearance, social life, religious beliefs, and

cultural traditions of the people he met on the islands of Samar, Leyte, and Cebu in
great detail.

4. What were the traditions or way of living of the natives as observed by the travelers?

Pigafetta gave us a look into the political, economic, and social realities of the
Visayan islands in the 16th century. His information on the local people's economic
activity and the commodities they provided for trade.

5. What were the cultural practices imparted by Magellan’s group/Spaniards to the natives?

The cultural traditions introduced to the indigenous by Magellan's

group/Spaniards were used to convert the local tribes to Christianity.

6. How did Magellan’s companions treat the natives?

Magellan's companions treat the Indians well since they engage with them
frequently. The local leader, his wife, and a group of natives were all baptized and
converted to Christianity. Magellan believed that by persuading other local tribes to
convert, he might convert the rest of the world.

B. The KKK and the Kartilya ng Katipunan

1. What was the political context when the Kartilya ng Katipunan was written?

The socio political context when the kartilya was written was to fully
understand their politicaland ethical code and purposes. To change the way people
understood and behave towards the katipunan.

2. How will you visualize the dynamics of the Katipunan as an organization?

The objectives of the Katipunan, as the brotherhood was popularly known,

were threefold political, moral, and civic. They advocated for freedom from the yoke
of Spain, to be achieved through armed struggle. They also saw it as their personal
responsibility to help the poor and the oppressed, and to teach them good manners,
self awareness, and morality.

3. How would you describe the Kartilya in terms of its form/writing style and content?

Emilio Jacinto wrote the Kartilya ng Katipunan, which served as a guide for
members of the Kataas-taasang, Kagalang-galangang Katipunan ng mga Anak ng
Bayan KKK and outlined the organization's laws and values. Mga Aral ng Katipunan
Ng Mga Anak ng Bayan" was the original title of "Kartilya ng Katipunan," which was
acclaimed then and now for its metaphorical but accurate description of the
principles of life that a Katipunero must follow. Its first statement appears to be a
creed about service to the people and fellow human beings: "A livelihood not spent
for a great and holy purpose is wood without shade but rather toxic plant."
The moral and ethical norms that we wish to apply to the Katipunan as a true
Filipino brotherhood will be noticed by the "Kartilya ng Katipunan." It emphasizes
neighborly kindness and collaboration, faith in reason, and human dignity and
honor preservation.

4. Considering the present circumstances in the Philippines, do you think the provisions of the
Kartilya can help address some of the problems of Philippines society? Give specific examples.

The Kartilya ng Katipunan's standards are vital in our society, in our opinion,
because the organization's objective is to maintain peace and order in our country
during their time. One of Kartilya ng Katipunan's most useful ideals is to treat
others fairly and to defend the underprivilege in opposition to the oppressor
Discrimination and oppression of the poor are currently a problem in our society,
according to the United Nations. The teachings of Kartilya ng Katipunan are
opposed to this, and we felt like we should follow their advice. Our country's goal is
to foster peace and other positive aspects of our environment.

5. As a student, how will you embody the teachings and guiding principles of the Kartilya? Cite
specific lines and concretize your answer?

Given the current political situation in the Philippines, the Katipunan's

Kartilya plays an important role in reminding Filipino youngsters of their three
fundamental responsibilities, and that is to show their love for God, love for nation,
and love for countrymen (that's also said in our prayer in Kolehiyo ng Lungsod ng
Lipa). This idea of love, which is equally shared between religion, patriotism, and
empathy, results in a holistic human capable of performing all of his or her
responsibilities as a Filipino, as reflected by the pure character of love. Every
person who lives under this Kartilya is constantly reminded that love triumphs over
individual effort in the creation of a nationhood larger than himself, larger than the
God-encircled country.

C. The Act of Proclamation of Independence of the Filipino People

1. How did the Philippines achieve its independence from Spanish colonial rule?

The revolution was ignited by the abuses and injustices of the Spaniards
against the Filpinos, which provoked the people to fight against Spain’s colonial
rule. Emilio Aguinaldo believed that the proclamation of the country’s independence
would inspire the people to fight more against the Spaniards.

2. Who was Emilio Aguinaldo? How did he end up as the leader of the revolution?

Emilio Aguinaldo was a filipino revolutionary, statesman and military leader

who is officially recognized. As the first and youngest president in the Philippines.
In 1895, Aguinaldo took up with a secret society of revolutionaries headed by fellow
ledge member Andres Bonifacio. When a rival faction excuted Bonifacio in 1847,
Aguinaldo assumed total leadership of the revolutionary against Spain.

3. Who were the inspirations of the revolution?

Three key leaders inspired or led the Filipino Independence movement. The
first two Jose Rizal and Andres Bonifacio would give their young lives for the
cause. The third, Emilio Aguinaldo, not only survived to become the first president
of the Philippines but also lived on into his mid-90s.

4. What were the symbolism used in the design of the Philippine flag?

The Philippine national flag has a rectangular design that consists of a white
equilateral triangle, symbolizing liberty, equality and fraternity; a horizontal blue
stripe for peace, truth, and justice; and a horizontal red stripe for patriotism and
valor.

5. How do you assess the implications of the calls for revising the design of the Philippine flag and
the Philippine National Anthem based on present circumstances?

As a sign of respect, all persons shall stand at attention and face the
Philippine flag, if there is one displayed, and if there is none, they shall face the
band or the conductor. At the first note, all persons shall execute a salute by
placing their right palms over their left chests. It symbolizes patriotism, love of
country and sense of nationhood and embodies the aspirations and sentiments of
the Filipino people in their unceasing quest for independence. It stands as
instrument of unity that binds the Filipino people. Republic Act 8491, or the “Flag
and Heraldic Code of the Philippines,” mandates that reverence and respect shall
be accorded at all times to the Philippine flag, the national anthem and other
national symbols that embody the country's ideals and traditions, and express the
principles of sovereignty and national.

6. What is the relevance of the Act to the present time?

The declaration of independence is one of the most important milestones in

Philippine history. The country was colonized by many nations for hundreds of
years. Imagine achieving your freedom after all the hardships you've been through.
It is priceless.

D. Philippine Cartoons: Political Caricatures of the American Era (1900-1941)

1. What was the significance of political cartoons during the American period?

Political cartoons became prominent as a medium of expression during the

American era. To reveal the flaws of the American colonial government, several
artists used cartoons as political commentary. Many artists use their pen and paper,
mostly in sketching, to express their views and opinions against the American
colonial rule. It also portrays the tenant farmers' inequities and harsh treatment.

2. How is McCoy’s political cartoons important to the grand narrative of Philippine history?

McCoy's political cartoons were eye-opening for any Filipino who wanted to
understand more about the Filipinos' situation under American rule. Every Filipino's
imagination is awakened by this collection of Philippine cartoons from political,
socio-cultural, and economic settings.

3. How is Lipag-Kalabaw’s political cartoons important to the grand narrative of Philippine history?

In terms of politics, it is apparent that the Filipinos paid a high price for
American-style democracy. Not only between customers and patrons, but also
between newly formed political parties comprised of the elite and the United States,
patronage became significant and powerful. As a result, the ability of rival political
parties to compel voters to make decisions was nullified. The problem persists to
the present day, with politicians shifting from one party to another depending on
who was the more powerful at the moment.

4. How is the Philippine cartoons relevant to the present time?

Philippine cartoons provide a brilliantly colored alternative to traditional news

reporting, giving a welcome diversion from the country's increasingly bleak political
discourse. Cartoons provide accessible and immediate comments and analysis on
current events due to their capacity to distill news and opinion into a caricature.

5. What is the relevance of caricatures to the Philippine present day circumstances?

Caricature is one of the ways people express their displeasure with activities
that many Filipinos find disrespectful. The photos might provide a dramatic
interpretation of the news for the day. They are able to explain and investigate tales
in ways that articles are unable to. They capture the inimitable human essence of
their subjects in order to humanize the issue they represent more effectively than
words or film.

E. Speech of President Corazon Aquino before the Joint Session of the US Congress in 1986

1. Who was the author of the speech?

Maria Corazon "Cory" Sumulong Cojuangco Aquino, popularly known as

Corazon Aquino, was the author of the speech.

2. What were the implications of the speech?

Corazon Aquino's address was littered with references to her husband,

former Senator Aquino, whom the Philippines had designated as the anti-Marcos
poster boy. It was also inspired by her experiences before and after her husband,

Marawoy, Lipa City, Batangas 4217 | https://www.facebook.com/KLLOfficial/

Ninoy Aquino's death. It was also founded on the fact that, as a Filipino, she was
horrified by the country's plight after more than a decade of social and political
persecution.

3. What do you think was the motive/purpose of the speech?

The author's major points were around the country's constitutional and
economic recovery following Marcos' dictatorship. To aid the country's recovery,
Corazon Aquino sought financial support from the United States. Furthermore,
Corazon's speech served to publicly declare and commemorate the Filipino
people's freedom, as well as to express how Filipino citizens came together to
reclaim the democracy that had been taken away from them during Marcos'
administration.

4. How do you relate the speech to the Philippines’ current socio-economic and/or socio-political
conditions?

The country was only beginning its long journey to recovery. As a result, by
outlining the status of the country to Congress, she also made a plea for support or
financial assistance in restoring full constitutional government and reviving the
country's economy.

5. How did the speech affect you as a viewer? What points of the speech did or did you not agree
with? Why?

We felt as if we were there right now, experiencing emancipation from

oppression and democracy, after hearing the speech. We realized how important
freedom is to a country while listening to it, and we realized that we should speak
up. Citizens should get together and combat injustice as well. With the current state
of the country, protecting all people' rights should be a top priority as citizens
speak out against government misdeeds and tyranny.
