Osteomyelitis:

I decided to pick an article on Osteomyelitis because I am not familiar with the pathology and I

had a desire to learn more about this potentially destructive infection. I also educated myself as

to what role I can play in identifying & potentially preventing the infection. Osteomyelitis can

be caused by in the patient's case an infection within an open wound and then leads to the bone

itself due to a recent surgery. Its likely the bacteria is staphylococcus aureus (a common gram-

positive bacteria). You begin antibiotics the patient was on Vancomycin via IV to treat their

Osteomyelitis. In some cases amputation needs to be done which as an open wound opens up

more potential for the infection to worsen. This article is what I needed to explore to expand my

nursing knowledge, I have had a few patients present with Osteomyelitis. As nurses we are

constantly learning for our patient's sake. I will never forget what Osteomyelitis is caused by,

how it presents, and if it goes untreated what occurs. Ideally being able to prevent amputation

because that has a very severe mental impact. See something, say something, do something!
