WHERE TO WATCH IT
The parade starts on Piccadilly outside
the Ritz hotel. It turns right to Piccadilly
Circus where it takes a right along the stone
fronts of the grand buildings of Regent
Street St James’s. It then heads left along Pall
Mall, and right along Cockspur Street, past
Canada House to Trafalgar Square.
Head down White street dancers KNE, who made it
big on Britain’s Got Talent hall, past 10 Downing Street
and Horse Guards to Parliament Square, where it ends
within sight of the Houses of Parliament. This is a
great way to do some sightseeing at the same time.
TOP TIPS
• My absolute top tip is: wrap up. This is London
in January, people – you’re going to be standing
outside for four hours or more and it’s chilly.
• If you can’t see in the place you are, move
further along the route – you can usually find
somewhere quieter.
• After the parade, transport will be busy, so
take the time to enjoy the city. The Egyptian
stylings along the Victoria Embankment are
fascinating – then you could cross to the South
Bank for its Winter Market.
• There is limited transport on New Year’s Day,
so check what is running before you set off.

Plant power
Formula 1 champion Lewis Hamilton has launched a plant-based burger joint,
Neat Burger. After conquering the motor-racing circuit, the star has ambitions for global
domination of the vegan burger market – so race down to the branch near Oxford Circus and
be among the first to try what everyone’s going to be talking about. Grab a stool and opt for
a chick’n’ burger, veggie hot dog or a patty, with or without cheese. If you’re a meat lover, it really
does taste just as good. Try the hash browns with a dairy-free coconut shake on the side.

’ve been researching this ever since I moved
to London. The most successful crawls I’ve had
were in Brixton and the City of London but,
as research for this article, I went on a pub
tour – I’m a professional journalist, after all.
My tour was with the London Literary Pub
Crawl, which leads a group of up to 20 around
Fitzrovia and Soho once a week. The tour is run
by the Maverick Theatre Company, so you’re
guaranteed to have an actorly guide. I really like
this concept; tour a historic part of London with
an expert and discover lots of interesting pubs.
Dylan Thomas features heavily on the tour,
because the Welsh poet was a big fan of drinking

in Fitzrovia. We started in a quiet upstairs room
at The Wheatsheaf, so that we could meet each
other and listen to some literary extracts. I loved
The Fitzroy Tavern, which includes the Dylan
Thomas library: this tiny room for five people
has an open fire, so it’s wonderful in winter.
Next is George Orwell’s former local, the classy
Newman Arms, which is thought to have
inspired the ‘Proles’ pub in his dystopian novel,
1984. As we strolled to Soho, we visited drinking
dens associated with Karl Marx, TS Eliot and
Francis Bacon. The leisurely tour includes plenty
of stops, but you’re not under pressure to keep
drinking – and I thought it was a fantastic insider’s
look at West End nightlife. Tickets are £29
(drinks not included) and advance online booking
is essential (www.londonliterarypubcrawl.com).
As for the City, I love drinking in this district
because it’s the oldest part of London, with
the most ancient pubs. I recommend picking
a Saturday or Sunday when the area is quieter
and visiting Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese,
the Cittie of Yorke and The Blackfriar
(www.nicholsonspubs.co.uk).
Finally, Brixton is a good choice because it’s
compact and you can walk from pub to pub, but
it’s not as prohibitively busy as central London
can be. Brixton has a real party atmosphere,
so there’s a lot of choice: Effra Social and
Effra Hall Tavern both get my vote
(www.effrasocial.com; www.theeffra.com).

This picturesque little harbour first appears
in series two, episode two as Pyke and the Iron
Islands. It becomes Lordsport Harbour, a place
of high importance, where Theon Greyjoy reaffirms
his loyalty to his family by being baptised into the
religion of the Drowned God. A different section
of Ballintoy beach was also used to recreate the
castle of Dragonstone – the ancestral seat of
House Targaryen. In reality, Ballintoy is a village
