CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION
Shira Universe is a derivative of the Mitaka astronomy space simulator for the use of planetarium.
Mitaka includes the observations and theoretical data related to the so far known. Mitaka was
originally developed for 3D imaging operations in space theaters as part of the "Four Dimensional
Digital Universe" (4d2U) project within the Japan Space Agency (NAOJ) in the direction of this data.
(See http://4d2u.nao.ac.jp/html/program/mitaka/index_E.html)

Sureyyasoft has made many improvements to make Mitaka more effective in planetarium, and
published its first version under the name of Shira Universe in late 2015.

The Shira Universe user interface is similar to the other planetarium presentation program
ShiraPlayer. The most important development in Shira programs; the projection screen to be used
for the theater image and the control console screen have been separated from each other.

The Shira Universe supports projection, mirrored systems and multiple projector systems, as well
as flat screen support for use in classroom presentations.

In this user's manual, unlike the Mitaka, the extra features of the Shira Universe will be explained.
The above link to the basic features of Mitaka can be used.

Reference http://www.sureyyasoft.com/

Note: The "SU" abbreviation will be used instead of the Shira Universe on the following pages of
the manual.

CHAPTER 3

GENERAL DISPLAY SETTINGS

3.1 DISPLAY VIEWS
The SU is normally designed for use with a laptop computer or computer monitor with a Control
Display and the other as a Projector Screen with two display outputs. Thanks to the console control
screen, all menu commands are applied professionally without directly interfering with the projector
screen. It is recommended that the console display has a resolution of 1920x1080 (FullHD)..

Control Screen Projector Screen

The Shira Universe has two screen outputs. Control and Projector Screen.

The display resolution of the operating system should be designed as above.

8
SHIRA UNIVERSE USER GUIDE 2021
3.2 PROJECTOR DISPLAY SETTINGS
SU supports the following projection types.
- Fisheye Lens (Fisheye) projector
- Spherical Mirror system
- Flat Screen (Normal Flat screen)
- Multiple projectors Warp and Blend systems
- Hakoniwa CALIBRATION (JAPANESE LIBRACO.) http://www.libra-co.com/hako/
- Vioso Calibration (German Vioso GmBH) http://vioso.com/
3.2.1 F ISHEYE L ENS P ROJECTOR SETTINGS
The SU basically produces a projection image of the fish eye. Other types of projections are obtained
from the fish eye view. The following operations are applied for projection of the fish eye.
- Click the Settings button in the button group on the top panel of the Console Screen.
- The "Projector Settings" tool box is selected in the "Shira Universe Settings" window.
- "Fisheye Lens" is selected in the Projector System combo box.
- The Show Projector Windows selection box is selected.
- "Frameless Projector Windows" is selected.
- For the projector, L: Left T: Top W: Width and H: Height are entered.
- The resolution of the projector output that can be obtained with Overall Res can be changed.
- Auto Fit button allows automatic placement of the projector window when a second screen or
projector is connected during the setting process on the computer.
Save All button to complete the recording. The program is restarted.

9
SHIRA UNIVERSE USER GUIDE 2021
3.2.2 S PHERICAL M IRROR
SU forms the projection required for spherical mirrored systems. For this, the warp correction data
files obtained from Paul Bourke's website (http://paulbourke.net/dome/warpingfisheye/) are used.
First of all, "Spherical Mirror" option is selected in the Projection system combo box. The
corresponding data file is marked in the Correction Data combo menu. Other settings are the same
as the fisheye projection settings.
Horizontal Mirror: The image is mirrored in the horizontal axis.
Vertical Mirror: The image is mirrored in the vertical axis.

10
SHIRA UNIVERSE USER GUIDE 2021
3.2.3 F LAT S CREEN
In some cases the SU program may be required to be used in classroom presentations. In this case,
flat projection screens will be used.
The "Flat Screen" option is selected in the projection system combo box. Other settings are like fish-
eye system settings.

3.2.4 M ULTIPLE P ROJECTOR W ARP A ND B LEND S YSTEMS

SU supports multiple projector systems on a single computer. This process is called single-channel
multi-projection system in practice. The SU is supported by external calibration systems for perfect
warp and blend operations. For now, two separate company's calibration system can be used.

11
SHIRA UNIVERSE USER GUIDE 2021

3.2.4.1 H AKONIWA C ALIBRATION S YSTEM

The Hakoniwa calibration system supports up to 3 projectors. Japan is also a widely used calibration
system. Auto calibration is not available However, there is a tool that can perform warp and blend
operations very precisely. More information ( http://www.libra-co.com/hako/ )

The SU Hakoniwa system uses warp - obj extension files- and blend - png extension files- to perform
image splitting and merging on the dome. There are files of the Hakoniwa 3 projector system, which
is placed as an example in the SU installation package. These files can be understood from the multi-
projector logic of SU using for testing purpose. The sample data is in the "projset" folder.

12
SHIRA UNIVERSE USER GUIDE 2021
Each projector output is added to the "Added Channels" list box, setting left, top, width and height.
Warp and blend files are selected. Save All button saves all the settings and restarts the program.
Please contact Sureyysoft for detailed usage information.

3.2.4.1.1 PROJECTOR COLOR ADJUSTMENT

Because Hakoniwa is a precise manual calibration system, it is necessary to adjust the color
differences of the projectors over time. The SU contains the "Projector Color Settings" panel, which
allows custom color settings for the Hakoniwa system for each projector. The corresponding
projector is selected in the channel list and the color settings are made.

3.2.4.2 V IOSO C ALIBRATION S YSTEM

The Vioso calibration system supports up to 16 projectors. It is a calibration system used in many
parts of the world. An IP camera is placed in the center of the dome to perform auto calibration. A
perfect calibration is obtained within minutes. For detailed information
(http://vioso.com/products_fulldome.php)

It is possible to use SU in two different ways with the Vioso calibration system.

13
SHIRA UNIVERSE USER GUIDE 2021

3.2.4.2.1 USING VIOSO CALIBRATION F ILE

The Vioso calibration system produces a single file with a VWF extension resulting in calibration. The
Projection system "Vioso Calibration" is selected on the SU Projector Settings screen. VWF file
selection is done. Save All button saves the process and restarts the program.

14
SHIRA UNIVERSE USER GUIDE 2021

3.2.4.2.2 USING VIOSO DOME SERVER

Vioso has a hardware server in the dome solution. This server combines all the screens connected to
the projectors in one screen with a mosaic view. This feature is available on top of NVIDIA or ATI
brand cards. Vioso performs the warp and blend operation at the level of the display driver by
applying the output obtained from the automatic calibration to each screen image.

After this stage, the second screen acts as a single projector screen, allowing the standard use of the
SU.

More information: http://faq.vioso.com/overview.html

3.2.4.3 PREPARED TWO PROJECTOR OUTPUT

After version 3.2 of SU has manual calibration with precision settings for opposite cave mounting a 2
multi-projection system. Shira Universe supports either 2x 4K projectors (4096x2160 each) mounting
wide angle lenses to provide a 4K output; or 2x 2K projectors (2560 x 1600) to provide a 2K output on
the dome using a single computer. Distortion and blend calibration settings are also very simple to to
the simple 2-projector system.

This solution does not require any another calibration software and only require basic hardware
specifications.

This window has functions to select the target object, to scale the camera viewpoint in the
Spaceflight mode, and to specify three target objects in the downscale mode.

5.1.3.1 S TATIONARY L OCATION

This feature places you at a fixed location in space, relative to the Sun. Stationary locations can be
entered as heliocentric ecliptic Cartesian co-ordinates or heliocentric ecliptic spherical co-ordinates.

When you click “Move To” while on Earth, the initial co-ordinates set the current heliocentric co-
ordinates of your current Earth location. If you advance time forward, you’ll quickly be left behind
as Earth continues on in its orbit, while you remain at the same position in space.

41
SHIRA UNIVERSE USER GUIDE 2021

For Cartesian co-ordinates, the position on the ecliptic plane is given by X and Y coordinates. The Z
coordinate takes the location out of the plane of the ecliptic. For spherical co-ordinates, “radius” is
the distance from the Sun’s centre, “theta” is the position angle from the ecliptic plane, and “phi” is
the position angle along the ecliptic plane. Heliocentric means that the Sun is the centre of the
coordinate system, so the point (0,0,0) is at the centre of the Sun, using either Cartesian or
spherical co-ordinates.

5.1.3.2 T ARGET I N P LANETARIUM M ODE

When the target object is selected in the glare mode, this object is fixed at the center of the sky,
and all movements occur around this object. With the button, the selected object is centered.

CHAPTER 7

SHIRA MOVIE ENCODER

ENCODING HIGH RESOLUTION MOVIE

There are various types of movie codecs, so it's difficult to play all of them smoothly. Shira Universe
provides own GUI encoder (powered by FFmpeg) for bit rate controlled encoding to guarantee
smooth playback. If you want to play a high resolution Dome Master movie such as 1K (1024x1024
pixels) or 3K (3072x3072 pixels) smoothly, it is highly recommended to use Shira Movie Encoder to
convert it to a bit rate controlled file. Such conversion process is called Encode (or Transcode, if
converting movie to movie).

Launch Shira Movie Encoder by double clicking "Shira Movie Encoder" icon. Drag and drop a movie
file or a folder which contains sequential image files on this window. It opens Encode Job Settings
dialog. Check if the correct file path and duration is recognized in this dialog. Enter an output file
path in [Output File] field, and select [Profile] for your target. Profiles which named 1K or 3K mean
that movie will be resized to these square resolutions. If you don't need such extra resizing or the
content is not Dome Master format, select one of No Resize profiles. Click [OK] button to close the
dialog. A new Encode Job line will be added in the list of the Encoder. After you have added all the
encoding jobs you have, click [Start All] button to start these encoding at the same time.

75
SHIRA UNIVERSE USER GUIDE 2021
[Start Encode Job] button runs encoding one by one, but usually a few encoding jobs run in parallel
with no problem. After all the encoding jobs are finished, you can find the encoded files in the
output folder you specified. Shira Universe requires a separate sound file if you want to play it with
a movie.

Put a sound file in the fulldome folder of the movie file with the same file name, for example
movie.mp4 and movie.wav. When you encode a movie which contains sound, it separates the movie
and sound by this rule. If you move these files, do not forget to move them together.

With Shira Encoder 1.1 came new 4K profiles :

- 4K High Quality that produces single 4Kx4K dome master movie file like old profiles
- 4K 2-pieces High Quality produces two 4K HD movie files.
