2. CUSTOMS OF MY CULTURE UNUSUAL TO A FOREIGNER
In the kikuyu culture, there are several customs that a foreigner can find unusual. They
have been practiced for ages and some of them have been hindrances to the spread of the
gospel. To the foreigner understanding them is quite difficult. Those who are Christians
have a great challenge with these customs because some are unbiblical. These includes
the following:

i. Religion

The kikuyu believe that their God Mwene Nyaga lives at Mount Kenya. The
Cultural kikuyu pray as they face Mount Kenya, which is at the central region of
Kenya. They offer burnt offerings of goats as a sacrifice to appease their God.
Women are a lesser gender and men take the lead in the sacrificing ceremony.
The main alter is under the fig (Mugumo) trees, which are preserved specifically
for the sacrificial purpose.

ii. Ancestral relationship

As the sacrifices are made a traditional beer, known as muratina is prepared.
Some is poured down from a cows horn as an offering to their ancestors. They
believe that if the ancestors are not happy the sacrifice cannot be acceptable
before God. This practice of pouring beer into the ground is done in many kikuyu
ceremonies
iii. Blessing ceremony

There is another occasion called the children blessing ceremony. Here derived from
Genesis 27, where Isaac asked Esau to bring him sweet or tasty food, the kikuyu children
go to their parents. The difficult issue is that children are blessed with the traditional beer.
Some of it is poured down to the ground those who are present both men and women are
allowed to drink and in some cases it ends up as a drinking spree. The cultural belief is
that is the absence of beer the blessing is incomplete.

iv. Female circumcision

Although the government has waged War on this practice, the cultural
conservatives still continue to circumcise women. They believe that the sign of
maturity in a women, Just as with man is by being circumcised. Despite the
government’s effort to curb the practice, it continues to be done especially in the
rural areas.
The above among other practices form part of the kikuyu culture. Although there
are some good cultural practices, the above form bad culture and the foreigner
missionaries find these as great stumbling blocks in the spread of the gospel.
Some are so deep – rooted that even some Christians in the church, mix their
culture with the Christian faith.
Conclusively I say, unless by the grace of God culture is difficult to eliminate
from a people way of life, but by and by, the transformative power of the Gospel
continue to change and transform more and more people.

3 GOSPEL TRACT EXPLAINING SALVATION PLAN
Preaching salvation to a person from a naturalist worldview.
The naturalist worldview is described in the 1st as the worldview of the materialist mind
of modern technology and industrialization. These are people who are looking for science
for answer to their social economic problems. They also possess an atheistic character.
Considering and putting into account Hesselgraves three elements in a speaker approach
that is the source‘s character the content of the message and the style of communicating
the message the following is my tract.

Genesis 1:1 the bible records that in the beginning God created the heavens and the earth “NIV.
This first verse of the bible reveals that God who is external, existed before creation, and that all
things were created exnihilo by him. Therefore nature owes its origin from God who exists
Romans 1:20 also confirms this and it records “ For since the creation of the world God’s
invisible qualities his eternal power and divine nature have been Cleary seen being understood
from what has been made so that people are without excuse”. (NIV)

The above scripture expose the truth that science, exercised by naturalists who believe in
tangible material is actually a study of the things that the invisible God created. Since God is
spirit he cannot be seen but the spirit of man which makes him/her a living being is able to
perceive his existence by seeing what he created the scripture reveals that all human beings
including the naturalist knows that there is God.

The account of Genesis chapter three records the fall of man, when he rebelled against God and
was sent away from the garden of Aden. God who is abounding In love, brought the salvation
plan by sending Jesus Christ his only son, to die on the cross as an atoning sacrifice for the sake
of saving humanity and bring man back into fellowship with him John 3:16 records that “for God
so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son that whoever believe in him shall not
perish but have everlasting life” Here the naturalists should believe Jesus who is the mediator
between God and man. The naturalist, should also believe that there is life after death and that
without salvation through Jesus Christ one is doomed for everlasting death. One should
therefore not focus only the material world, which is only on but for a short time, but should
focus and invest in the life after death, which will be forever.

Hebrews 9:27 the scripture says that just as people are destined to die once and after that to face
judgment. "“John 3:18 says that whoever does not believe Christ stands condemned already,
because they have not believed in the name of God’s one and only son.

In conclusion, the naturalistic worldview person, should accept salvation, for without Christ one
is separated from God and that sin of unbelief is the one that blind him/her eyes not to see the
reality about God’s existence Salvation is a matter of choice, since man was created with
unlimited free will and is at liberty to exercise it but the scripture, which was given by the
inspiration of God, plainly explains the destiny of those who reject Christ which is external death
in hell, and that of those who accepts Christ as their savior which is eternal life in heaven.

3. USE OF A CULTURAL TRUTH AS PRESENTED IN A SHORT STORY.

The following story is an illustration of the reality of the truth that man is created with a
free will and that salvation is a matter of a choice that one has to make him or herself, and
that the day of salvation is today.

A young girl one day went to visit her friend in the neighborhood. In her neighbors home
they started to play the seek and hide game in the company of other children. As they
played, the girl named Wangare, accidentally fell a pit which had been left uncovered that
was unnoticeable since some grass and other weeds had grown around and had covered
had fallen into the pit and made a distress call. People came and on clearing the top of the
pit, they found that Wangare was lucky to be alive.
They realized that Wangare had fallen on a very big python snake, but it was asleep.
Wangare did not realize that she was stepping on such a dangerous reptile and she could
enjoy the soft, spongy and springy feeling she experienced as she stepped and danced
over it.

The people who came to rescue her could see all the danger and one of them decided to
go down the pit and save the girl, before the python could wake up. The man stretched
his hand to hold Wangere but Wangare refused, rather she enjoyed the soft and
comfortable experience she felt as she danced over the python.

The scripture says in Deuteronomy 30:19. This day I call the heavens and the earth as
witnesses against you that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now
choose life, so that you and your children may live.” NIV

Page 6

In the above short story the pit represents the worldly and the python represents Satan,
his craftiness and the way he entices people with the worldly joy and lust. Dancing over
the soft and spongy ground that Wangare enjoyed represent the lusts that continue to keep
people in sin. Wangare eventually refused to be saved and choose to enjoy the experience
in the pit finally the python woke up, and hungry as it was swallowed Wangare. As she
was being swallowed, she cried for help but it was too late, she was eaten up by the
python.

The man who had gone down the pit represents Jesus, who came down on earth gave his
life for us to be saved. He offered his life but the sinner, represented by Wangare has to
make his/her choice which comes out of his/her free will.

2 Corinthians 6:2 the scripture says, “…….. in the time of my favour I heard you and in
the day of salvation I helped you. I tell you, now is the time of God’s favour, now is the
day of salvation (NIV)

The story of Wangare is very illustrative of the two scripture verse that shows that
salvation is provided by God through his son Jesus, but at the same time, man has to
make a choice to accept and receive it. Wangare did not die because there was no
salvation it was a result of her own choice. So is it to the people who refuse to receive
God’s gift of salvation now that is in this present life because after death there is
judgment as recorded in Hebrews 9:27, “Just as people are destined to die once, and after
that to face judgment.
