Recitation Worksheet Week 11

INSTRUCTIONS: Work with the members of your recitation group to solve these problems. Use the
Problem Solving Template to structure your work. Group members should take turns filling out the fields
for the questions until each one has had a turn. Once you have the answer to a question, write it clearly
on this page below the question. At the end of recitation, your TA will collect the work done on the
Problem Solving Template Worksheets.

1. The photoionization of N2 in the thermosphere absorbs much of the high‐energy radiation
coming from the sun.
N2(g) + hν → N2+(g) + e−
If the ionization energy of N2 is 1495 kJ/mol, what is the maximum wavelength of a photon that
would have sufficient energy to ionize N2? To which region of the electromagnetic spectrum does
this photon belong?
2. 18.1 g of water (initially at 20.0 oC) is poured onto 270. g of hot, aluminum metal (initially at
500.0 oC). Once all of the water has vaporized (and no heat is lost to the surrounding air), what
will be the final temperature of the aluminum?

TMP, Al = 660. oC Csolid Al = 24.2 J/mol oC Cm, liquid Al = 29.3 J/moloC

Cm, liquid water = 75.3 J/moloC Cm, water vapor = 33.1 J/moloC

ΔHfus, water = 6.02 kJ/mol ΔHvap, water = 40.67 kJ/mol

3. Consider pure substances composed of the following molecules. For each set, put the molecules in
order of increasing: boiling point, vapor pressure, and viscosity.
CH3(CH2)3OH CH3(CH2)3CH3 CH3(CH2)4CH3
Check/evaluate: How is the strength of the intermolecular forces related to these liquid properties? Once
you have prepared your rankings, check to make sure that trend in intermolecular forces and the
expected relationship to each property matches. Which of these liquid properties is inversely related to
the strength of intermolecular forces (i.e., as intermolecular forces increase, this property decreases)?
4. Below is a phase diagram of water. The figures next to it depict water in various phases. Where on
the phase diagram are you likely to find H2O in the state depicted by each of these pictures? The
black circles are oxygen atoms, and the white circles are hydrogen atoms.

5. Draw the heating curve (a plot of T as a function of heat added) for a substance that makes a
transition from the initial phase (I) to the final phase (F) shown on the phase diagram below.
