In SB 3.11.41p it is stated that the earthly covering of the


universe is ten times the thickness of the universe itself, or 40
billion miles. This is confirmed in other places in the
Bhägavatam, including SB 3.29.43p. If we take it that the first
shell has a radial thickness of 40 billion miles, and that each
successive shell is ten times as thick as the one preceding it,
then the outer radius of the seventh shell comes to 44,444,442
billion miles.
The 5 layers or elements covering the universes are each ten times
sicker than the one before, and all the universes clustered together
appear like atoms in a huge combination. (3.11.41

relation to 4 billion miles is
Vrindavan
the same as the difference in
distance between Vrindavan
Dwaraka and Dwarka (500 miles) in

To say nothing of this planet
earth, the whole universe, with
innumerable planets
throughout the galaxies, is
comparable to a single
mustard seed in a bag full of
mustard seeds. But the poor
materialist makes plans to live
comfortably here and thus
wastes his valuable human
energy…

Creation of Matter
At this point of creation, the eggs are
clustered together. Five Elements are
making up the layers covering them and
eighteen other elements are in an
undifferentiated and unanimated state.
This state is called pradhana (matter in
its most subtle form).

each universal egg pray for help to the
Lord and the Lord enters with the time
factor (SB 3.6.2)

The time factor enters
the dormant potency: As
a woman cannot produce
children unless
impregnated by a man,

Supreme Personality of

• Q: I have heard that all of the planets are in the stem of the lotus from which Brahmä
took birth. How can that be?

• A: This is stated in SB 1.3.2p. Since the planetary systems are distributed throughout
the universal globe, it must be that the stem encompasses everything within this
globe. We should note that the standard pictures we see of Brahmä sitting on the
lotus flower are three-dimensional representations of a scene that cannot be seen
using our ordinary senses. Although the pictures show the lotus stem emerging from
the navel of Garbhodakaçäyé Viñëu, Brahmä himself was unable to locate the origin
of the stem. Thus, part of the scene was beyond the senses of Brahmä, and so it is
certainly beyond the reach of our senses. We also note that the planetary systems
were created by Brahmä from the lotus (SB 3.10.7–8). This suggests that these
systems were produced by transforming the substance of the lotus.

For the creation of this material world, the Lord expands as Brahmä,
Viñëu, and Maheçvara (Çiva). Viñëu is a personal expansion, and
Brahmä is a jéva-tattva expansion. Between the personal viñëu-
tattva expansions and the jéva-tattva expansions is a kind of
intermediate expansion called Çiva, or Maheçvara. The material
ingredients are given, and Brahmä creates each universe. Viñëu
maintains the creation, and Lord Çiva annihilates it.

Mäyäväda philosophers,
they say that everyone is
God. How everyone can
be God? If everyone is
God, then what is the
significance of God?
Kåñëa is viñëu-tattva.
Kåñëa is not in the
category of jéva-tattva.
There are jéva-tattvas,
there are çakti-tattvas,
there are viñëu-tattvas.
People do not know it.

Lord Çiva is
considered the father
of this universe, and
material nature is
considered the mother.
The father and mother
are known as Lord
Çiva and goddess
Durgä. Together, Lord
Çiva’s genitals and the
vagina of goddess
Durgä are worshiped
as the çiva-liìga. This
is the origin of the
material creation.
Thus Lord Çiva’s position is between
that of the living entity and that of the
Supreme Lord. In other words, Lord
Çiva is neither the Supreme Personality
of Godhead nor a living entity. He is the
form through which the Supreme Lord
works to beget living entities within this
material world. As yogurt is prepared
when milk is mixed with a culture, the
form of Lord Çiva expands when the
Supreme Personality of Godhead is in
touch with material nature. The
impregnation of material nature by the
father, Lord Çiva, is wonderful because
at one time innumerable living entities
are conceived.
