Thriller History (song)
The lyrics begin by placing us at midnight and in the moonlight, something
very typical of horror movies. It is likely that when making the video there
were influences from recently released movies like Halloween (1978), Friday
the 13th (1980), or An American Werewolf in London (1981).
The story told in the verses is that of a boy who takes his girlfriend to the
movies to see a scary movie. In theory, the goal was to scare the girl so that
she would end up hugging the clever protagonist.
In the verses there are references to death and his frozen hand, to the movie
Alien: the eighth passenger, which came out three years before the video, to
calling an exorcist on the phone and things typical of horror movies, such as
monsters with as many eyes as possible. The more eyes, the scarier they
were.
You can look for other double meanings, like the one that gives the song its
title. “Thriller” can refer not only to the type of movie that the couple is going
to see, but also to the intention of the protagonist to “shudder” or “thrill” his
girl in English.
If we look at the meaning of “Thriller”, although it is a fictional story, it could
generate some controversy if it were published today: a boy who takes his
girlfriend to the movies to get her to hug him? I can imagine the accusations
of sexual harassment of the girl, objectification of women, etc. Let's not
forget that the video and the song were released more than 35 years ago.
