Mark Scheme
Leaving answers in fraction or not in 2/3sf: minus 1 mark overall
1 (a) Kinetic model of matter states that the tiny particles that make up matter
are always in continuous random moton. [1]
(b) Liquid molecules have strong forces of attraction between them and are
closely packed [1] whereas gas molecules have negligible forces of
attraction between them and are widely space apart [1] thus could be
compressed easily.
(c) Gas particle are in constant motion, bombarding on the walls of the can at
all times exerting forces on them. [1] Since P = F/A , pressure is exerted on
the wall. [1]
(d) Gas occupies larger volume, collides with liquid with lower frequency [1],
exerting less pressure and force on the perfume to push it out of the can.
[1] (deduct 1 mark if answer includes stating less forcefully)
(e) Gas will be heated up when it is near the fire. Gas particles will move with
larger kinetic energy, collide with the wall with greater force and frequency.
[1] Explosion may occur if pressure exerted due to gas in can is greater
than atmospheric pressure. [1]
2 (a) i 100 – 22 or 78 [1]
Q = 35 × 4200 × 78 = 1.15 x 107 J [1]
(a) ii P = E/t t = E/P = 1.15 × 107/2600 [1]
4.4/4.41/4.42 × 103 s [1]
(a) iii Heat escapes/lost to the surroundings [1]
(b) i Evaporation or condensation [1]
(b) ii any two points [2]
- Evporation only occurs at surface but boiling occurs throughout the
water.
- Evaporation occurs at any temperature but boiling occurs at its
boilding point
- Evaporation produces a cooling effect
- Evaporation does not produce bubbles
- Evaporation process is relatively slower
- Evaporation does not require exernal thermal energy source
Or
- Boiling takes in thermal energy whereas condensation releases
thermal energy.
- Boiling changes liquid to gas but condensation changes gas to
liquid.
3 (a)

-1 mark if wrong arrow direction

(b) any two of: virtual / full size/mag = 1 / same distance from mirror as the
display counter/ laterally inverted [2]
(c) Move the display counter vertically downwards away from the mirror .

4 (a)

[1]
(b) Angle of incident ray makes with normal [1] when emergent ray exits from
an optically denser medium into the optically less dense medium at 90o to
normal. [1]
(c) (48 – 50)o
(d) i Light is refracted out of the water surface within the circle.[1]
Light has undergone TIR outside the circle.[1]
(d) ii tan C = r/40 [1] If C = 490
r = 46 cm [1] (accept answers using C = 48 to 500)
(d) iii As the refractive index of the unknown liquid is less than water, based on
sin C = 1/n , the critical angle will be larger [1] thus it will form a circle of
light with a larger radius. [1]
(No mark will be given for stating larger radius if the explanation is wrong)
5 (a)(i) Diagram correct 2 marks, minus 1 for each error, eg image is bold, arrow
wrong direction.[2]

Focal length is 4.2 cm (+/- 0.4 cm)[1] / correct and labelled focal point with
F[1].

Focal length

(a)(ii) Any two - Upright/ magnified/ on the same side of the object [2]
(Minus 1 mark for each wrong answer, no mark for virtual since given in
question.)
(b) Any two - Real/ magnified/ inverted [2]
(Minus 1 mark for each wrong answer)
