Section-A (Reading Comprehension-13 Marks) ‘Typology Reading Skills ‘Conceptual Understanding, Decoding, Analysing, Inferring & Interpreting. , 1. Read the following passage carefully = I.» Music can make us feel nostalgic, melancholy or energized. It can make us want to dance. A new study, recently published online in ‘Psychology of Music’, suggests that interacting with others through music makes us more emotionally attuned to other people. IL Researchers at the University of Cambridge observed 28 girls and 24 boys, with a similar socioeconomic makeup. Roughly half of these children were randomly assigned to a special music program that the researchers designed, where children met once a week in small groups for an entire school year to play games that encourage interaction, imitation and “mindreading” through music. For example, in the “Mirror Match” game, the children had to repeat or match a short piece of music played by another student. 1 IIL The other half ofthe students also participated in weekly games that encouraged interaction and imitation, but their games were without music, using techniques like storytelling and drama instead. Before and after participating in either of the two groups, all children in the study took an array of tests to measure their “emotional empathy” or their ability to experience another's emotional state as their own. V. In one of these tests, each child was shown pictures of faces expressing six different emotions, and was asked to select the expression that most closely matched his or her own feelings, after viewing the clip. The children had to say whether they agreed with 22 statements designed to measure empathy, such as “J really like to watch people open presents, even when I don't get a present myself” VI. The results show that after the school year ended, empathy increased significantly among children in the music group but not in the group that played non-musical games. ) VIL. That finding was somewhat surprising to the researchers. “In a way we expected the children who participated in the control games group interaction program to also show an enhanced capacity for empathy following the program”, they observed. VIII. Still, the researchers are hesitant to draw any definitive conclusions from this single study, since the number of students involved was small. In their Psychology + of Music paper, they write that more research, involving larger groups of students, is needed to strengthen the link between music and empathy, to explore how long the emotional effects of group music training can last. IX. This research is important, they argue, because prior studies have suggested that empathy is vital to kind and cooperative behaviour, and to motivating People to stand up against bullying. Legal drugs such as alcohols and prescription pills that contain sedatives, are consumed over the prescribed level. These substances are generally consumed by people in order to gain different mood alterations according to their wish. In addition to this, these substances produce a disability in the person's brain that makes the brain generate signals that crave for more of the same substance, This gradually leads to addiction. ‘There are five stages in which a substance abuse gradually develops into an addiction. ‘The first stage is known as experimentation, where people start thinking that trying the substance once might not lead them to addiction. Normally experimentation starts at a very early age and at this age people are unaware of the effects of these substances. There are also other reasons like stress and related problems. The second stage deals with the regular use of these substances as one is not able to resist the emotions that they trigger. It could either be a happy feeling or sad one. But people just don't want to lose it and start consuming it regularly. The next stage deals with the overuse of the substance and this is the stage where 8 person gradually starts losing control. The fourth stage is addiction in which the person is not able to survive without the substances and the body starts demanding for more and more of that substance. The final and the ultimate stage is total , Addiction which makes the person get addicted to the substance and thereby lose any resentment that the person has towards that substance. From here, retreat or rehabilitation is extremely tough. (i) On the basis of your understanding of the above passage, make notes on it using headings and subheadings. Read the passage given below and answer the following questions : Refrigerators and heat pumps are he heat, Most of these fall into the category of closed systems. When a gas is compressed, its temperature increases. This hot gas can then transfer heat to its surrounding ‘when the compressed gas is allowed to expand, its temperature at engines that convert mechanical energy to environment. Then, pecomes colder than it was before it was compressed because some of its heat energy was removed during the hot cycle. This cold gas can then absorb heat energy from its environment. This is the working principal behind an air conditioner. Air conditioners don’t actually produce cold; they remove heat, The working fluid is transferred outdoors by a mechanical pump where itis heated by compression. Next, it transfers that heat to the outdoor environment, usually through an air-cooled heat exchanger. Then, it is brought back indoors, where it is allowed to expand and cool so it can absorb heat from the indoor air through another heat exchanger.
