Chess: the oldest game that
shook the new world

Chess is an ancient board game

that has been around for
centuries, reaching back to the
6th century in India. Throughout
the centuries, this two-player
strategy game has remained
popular as an intellectual
challenge and pastime for people
of all ages, young and old. In the
past couple of years, the game
has enjoyed a remarkable rise in
popularity, with a surging interest
in both professional chess
competitions and recreational
chess clubs. In terms of
professional players, the rise of
the internet has been a major
6
contributing factor in the growth
of chess’ popularity. Online chess
platforms such as Chess.com,
provide players with a convenient
way of playing and engaging with
the game from any location.
Chess.com reported that since
January 2020, they’ve had
astounding 238% increase in
users, with over 7.5 million users
active everyday. There are also
multiple guides and lessons
online, which allow even the
average person to learn the game
and get into it. Another major
factor in this uproar of popularity
was the release of the 7-episode
Netflix series “The Queen’s
Gambit”, in October of 2020, which
obviously engaged people into the
7
game. All of this has resulted in a
surge of interest from people from
all over the world as well as top
professionals, who have made
chess communities larger than
ever before. Live events, such as
the already famous Chess World
Championships and the
expansion of chess on established
streaming services such as Twitch,
have further helped to make
professional chess more visible
and accessible. Chess’ increased
visibility has only helped the rise
of the game. Professional players,
such as legendary Grandmaster
Magnus Carlsen, have become the
face of the game and given the
sport additional shine and
recognition. Such has been the
8
impact of chess’ greatest actor
that its influence has spread
amongst the general public and
people of all ages have taken to
playing the game on a casual and
recreational basis. The return of
the game to its traditional home,
the public parks and outdoor
spaces of the world, has also been
a huge boon. Chess streets and
squares, tucked in cities and
villages alike, has helped to make
the game more appealing and
attractive to people who may not
have even considered chess in the
past. Furthermore, the growth of
chess clubs, both in private and
public schools, has helped to
nurture chess’ popularity and
make it available to more
9
generations. The rise of chess’
popularity has been an incredibly
exciting development for the
game. It has helped to remind
people of the age-old game’s
intensity of strategic and mental
challenge that it offers. It has
helped to make chess accessible
to all people no matter age, race
or gender. As long as chess’
increased popularity continues,
we can expect to see its influence
and impact expand even further
in the future.
