Third Quarter- Module 2

Week 2
Introductory Message
For the facilitator:

This module was collaboratively designed, developed and evaluated by the

Development and Quality Assurance Teams of SDO TAPAT to assist you in helping
the learners meet the standards set by the K to 12 Curriculum while overcoming
their personal, social, and economic constraints in schooling.

As a facilitator, you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this module.
You also need to keep track of the learners' progress while allowing them to manage
their own learning. Furthermore, you are expected to encourage and assist the
learners as they do the tasks included in the module.

For the learner:

This module will help you learn important science ideas. You will understand these
ideas through various activities.

Below are some reminders in using this module:

1. Use the module with care. Do Not put unnecessary mark/s on any part of the
module.
2. Don’t forget to answer What am I good at? before moving on to the other
activities included in the module.
3. Read the instruction carefully before doing each task.
4. Observe honesty and integrity in doing the tasks and checking your answers.
5. Finish the task at hand before proceeding to the next.
6. Return this module to your teacher/facilitator once you are through with it.
If you encounter any difficulty in answering the tasks in this module, do not
hesitate to consult your teacher or facilitator. Always bear in mind that you are
not alone.

We hope that through this material, you will experience meaningful learning and
gain deep understanding of the relevant competencies. You can do it!
What’s my target?

This module will help you understand the effects of force on

the movement of objects.
At the end of this module, you will be able to:
1. identify the types of forces applied on objects to help them
move
2. describe what happens to an object’s movement when force
is applied
3. explain the effects of changing the amount of force applied
to an object
4. demonstrate examples of effects of forces on the movement
of an object

What am I good at?

Directions: Encircle the letter of the correct answer.
1. Which force keeps the boat float as shown in the picture
below?

A. Electricity C. Gravity
B. Friction D. Magnet

2. Which type of force will you apply if you want to push a

big box on the other side of your room?
A. Electricity B. Force C. Friction D. Gravity

3. What is the effect of pushing an object with a lighter force?

The object will ____________.
A. stay put C. stay still
B. move nearer D. move farther

1
4. Why do you need to kick hard a rolling ball to travel
farther? Because a hard force can ________________.
A. change the shape of the ball
B. move the ball farther
C. move the ball nearer
D. stop the ball rolling

4. The figure shows a boy applying a hard force to shoot the

ball in the ring. The action of a force can cause the ball to
________.

A. freeze
B. move fast
C. change its direction
D. change its shape

Lesson
Effects of Force on the Movement
2 of an Object

There are different types of forces that help make objects

move. The movement of an object depends on the amount of force
applied to it.

What’s to look back?

Directions: Answer the questions.

How will the swing move if the young girl pushed

strongly?
2
How will she stop the swing from moving?

What will I do?

Activity 1

Directions: Look closely at the pictures, then answer the

questions.

Picture B Picture C
Picture A

Questions:
1. What makes the flag in picture A wave in the sky?
_____________________________________________________
2. What will the pupil do in picture B to erase the writing
on the paper neatly?
______________________________________________________.
3. In picture C, what will happen to the ball after being
thrown into the air?
__________________________________________________.
4. What do you think made the ball moved downward?
_________________________________________________
5. What are the different forces that help make objects
move?
________________________________________________.

3
Activity 2
Procedure:
1. Get 2 empty pails of the same size.
2. Label the two pails as shown below.

A B
3. Pour water on Pail B until it is full.
4. Push Pail A with your two fingers.
5. This time, push Pail B with your two fingers with the
same effort as you did with Pail A.
Questions
1. Which is harder to push, pail A or pail B? Why?
_____________________________
2. What is the effect of force on the movement of an object?
_____________________________________________________.
Activity 3

A boy playing soccer

Questions:
1. What will the soccer player do to stop the movement of the
ball?
_______________________________________________________.
2. What will he do to let the ball travel farther or nearer?
______________________________________________________
3. Can he change the direction of the rolling ball? ____
How? _______________________________________________
4. What are the effects of force on the movement of an object?
__________________________________________________________.

4
What’s the meaning?

What Can Forces Do?

✧ Force is a push or pull. It can change the motion of an

object. Forces that act on objects that are not moving
are called balanced forces. Forces that act on objects
that are moving towards a specific direction are called
unbalanced forces.

✧ Any moving object is an object in motion.

✧ Types of forces applied on an object to make it move.

1. Gravity is a force of attraction of two objects. The direction

of the force is upward or downward. It causes an object
thrown upward to fall. The ball tossed upward will fall to the
ground.
2. Friction resists motion between two surfaces rubbing each
other. A rough surface produces greater friction while a
smooth surface produces lesser friction. Friction is present
whenever the surfaces of objects slide, roll, or rubbed against
other surfaces.
3. Buoyant force is an upward force that fluids exert on all
matter. It makes objects float in water. Water exerts an
upward force, as the pressure gets deeper to the bottom.
4. Wind, running water, and magnets can move objects.
Electricity can move objects also. Light Railway Transit
(LRT) and home appliances use electricity.

✧ The force applied on an object affects its movement. The

greater/harder the force applied, the farther/faster its
movement. The lighter/lesser the force, the nearer/slower its
movement.

5
What’s more to do?

Directions: Match column A to column B. Write only the letter of

the correct answer on the space before each number.
A. B.
___1. Makes MRT move A. Buoyant force
___2. Kicking a ball with stronger force B. Electricity
___3. Keeps the boat floating in water C. It stops.
___4. Acts an object that is not moving D. It moves farther.
___5. Pressing the break of a running E. Balanced force
bicycle

What did I get?

❖ There are different types of forces that can be applied on an

object to stop or move.
❖ A stronger force applied makes the object move farther while
lesser force exerted makes an object move nearer.

What can I show?

Directions: Study the picture of children playing tug-of-war.

Which group do you think will win? Why? Write
your answer on the spaces provided below.

Team A Team B

6
How’s my target now?

Directions: Read each item carefully. Encircle the letter of the

correct answer.
1. Which force acts on the wheel of a car shown in the
picture?

A. Electricity C. Gravity
B. Friction D. Wind

2. Why do you need to apply a greater force to move a heavy

cabinet?
A. Because all objects require greater force to move.
B. Because all cabinets require greater force to move
C. Because a heavy object requires greater force to move.
D. Because an empty or full cabinet requires greater force to
move.
3. Based on the picture, what will happen to the ball when the
softball player hit it? The ball will ________________________.

A. be broken
B. move forward
C. stop moving
D. move backward
4. Why does a kite move up higher in the sky when the wind
blows harder? Because the force of the wind affects the
_________________.
A. size of the kite C. weight of the kite
B. shape of the kite D. movement of the kite
5. Why does a rolling ball stop when you block it using your
right foot? Because in this situation force can _________.
A. slow down or completely stop a moving object
B. make a moving object move faster or slower
C. change the direction of a moving object
D. change the size and shape of an object
7
What else can I do?

Directions:
A. Read the situation and answer the questions.
A cyclist is running his bicycle very fast when suddenly
a cat crossed in front of him. What will the cyclist do to
stop his bicycle? What is the effect of force in this situation?
