MATERIAL: Duplex stainless steels with 30 ≤ FPREN ≤40 and 40 < FPREN ≤ 45.
There were no requirements of liquid quenching for duplex stainless steels in the 2002 edition of NACE MR 0175.
During the rewrite process that proceeded 2003 years edition of NACE MR 0175 and ISO 15156, a requirement of
liquid quenching was added. It was probably added in order to avoid “aging after heat treatment that some people
tired in the past”.
The quenching of duplex is included in various product standards such as ASTM A789, ASTM A790 and ASTM 480.
Liquid quenched air or rapid cooled by other means are included in ASTM A789, ASTM A790 and ASTM 480 for most
duplex stainless steels. To be in line with the text in ASTM A789, ASTM A790 and ASTM A480 the term “rapid cooled
by other means” is used in the ballot. The ballot proposes that “Wrought and cast duplex stainless steels shall be
solution annealed and liquid quenched or rapid cooled by other means.
