Chapter 9
1. Since Pip already knows his benefactor, and because Wemmick is working for Jaggers, it would seem
that Wemmick no longer cares mush for Pip. BUT… Jaggers is there and invites Pip to dine with him.
Pip is confused… (and so are we) - Dickens is actually having a bit of fun with his readers! He
WANTS us to doubt Wemmick… Twist (structural) Wemmick has been avuncular all through the
novel… OR… It is possible that Wemmick is only this way because his boss is there?
2. Pip prices together who Estella’s true mother is! Molly (Jagger’s housekeeper) os Estella’s true
mother! By the end of the chapter, Wemmick is “back”. (Incredulous?) This is a criticism of Dicken’s
novels, but it is up to you feel about it

Chapter 10
1. Normally, when Pip and Miss Havisham meet SHE has the power and control… (words, actions,
attitude), but this time, she is not like that at all… We, the readers, know that. Pip has literally
affected Miss Havisham’s hearth during his las visit. Dust (twilight, just past sunset), ruin, bells
chiming.. (The end of something…) Sybolism. Dramatic irony: We know and Pip knows that Estella is
Molly’s daughter but Miss Havisham doesn’t)
2. Giving money to Herbert (900 pounds) for his career, and keeping it a secret! She has signed to this.
3. We always thought of Miss Havisham as a sadistic person, filled with Schadenfreude. BUT… she has
suddenly realized trough Pip and the experienced with him over the years what she has really
done… The Horror of it! She is incapable of understanding the true horror of her actions… But she
is faced with it… She must confront it… (This is related to “Does she have to burn?”) Symbolic
thing…
4. Pip has realized from asking Miss Havisham that Estella’s… Pip has realized from asking Miss
Havisham that Estella was brought to Miss Havisham by Jaggers (HE brought Molly’s child to Miss
Havisham to be raised)…
5. Miss Havisham catches fire and because her place is so dirty and the clothing has been on her body
for years (implies) the fire is immense and consumes her! Yes, symbolically Miss Havisham has to
burn because she has be (reborn) from her past. She has owned up to her past! Finally! Allusion to
(Phoung = Firebird: bird that is reborn from its own ashes).
6. Chapter 10 closes with Pip leaning over Miss Havisham and actually kisses her (gently) and forgives
her (writing on the tablet).
