The THIRD Letter of JOHN

3rd JOHN Chapter 1

A Greeting from
John, the Elder
[2 John 1:1–3]

John 1:1 This letter from John the Elder is written

to Gaius, my dear friend, whom I love in the truth.

2 My dear friend, I pray that everything may go well

with you and that you may be in good health, as I
know you are well in spirit.

3 It brings great joy when the Lord's followers come

by and speak openly of how you obey the truth. 4

Nothing brings me greater joy than to hear that my

spiritual children are obeying the truth.

5 Dear friend, you have always been faithful in

helping others who follow our Lord, even the ones
you did not know before.

6 They have told the ecclesia here about your love.

They say you were good enough to welcome them

and to send them on their mission in a way that
GOD's servants deserve.

7 When they originally left to tell others about our

Lord, they decided not to accept help from anyone
who was not a follower.

8 We must support people like them, so that we too

may take part in what they are doing to spread the
truth.

Diotrephes and Demetrius

9 Earlier, I wrote briefly to the ecclesia. But
Diotrephes, who likes to take the lead among them
and put himself first, does not admit my expertise
and refuses to accept my suggestions or to listen to
me.

10 So when I arrive, I will call attention to what he

is doing, his boiling over and casting malicious
reflections upon us with insinuating language.

And not satisfied with that, he refuses to receive

and welcome the missionary brothers who come
there personally, and he also interferes with and
forbids those who would welcome them.

And when they do help our brothers, he puts them

out of the ecclesia (church).

11 Beloved, do not you imitate evil, but imitate

good. He who does good is of GOD; he who does
evil has not discerned or experienced GOD and
does not know Him at all.

12 In contrast, everyone speaks well of Demetrius,

and so does the true message that he teaches.

I also speak well of him, and you know what I say is

true.

Conclusion.
[2 John 1:12–13]

13 I have so much more to tell you, but I do not

want to do it with pen and ink.
14 I hope to see you soon, and we will talk together
face to face.

15 Peace be to you! (Shalom!)

The friends here send you greetings.

Remember me to every one of them personally by

name.
