CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

The first online food order was a pizza hut in 1994. The online food ordering market has increased in the
U.S with 40 percent of U.S adult having ordered their food online once. The online food ordering market
includes food prepared by restaurants, prepared by independent people. And groceries being ordered online and
then picked up or delivered. The first online food ordering service, worldwide waiter (now known as
waiter.com) was founded in 1995. The site originally serviced only northern California, later expanding to
several additional cities in the United States. By the late 2000’s major pizza chains had created their own mobile
applications and started doing 20-30 percent of their business online. With increased smartphone penetration,
and the growth of both uber and the sharing economy, food delivery startups started to receive more attention.
In 2010, snap finger, who is a multi-restaurant ordering website, had a growth in their mobile food orders by 17
percent in one year. By 2015, online ordering began overtaking phone ordering. In 2015, China’s online food
ordering and delivery market grew from 0.15 billion yuan to 44.25 billion yuan. As of September 2016, online
delivery accounted for percent of the 61 billion U.S restaurant transactions (Bisong-Abang Anthonia Obanghe,
2020)

According to research, it is feasible to implement an online food ordering system to Nigerian fast-food
restaurants and canteens. This is due to the system's ability to improve workplace efficiency, increase restaurant
revenues, and get rid of incorrect orders. As a result, it is worthwhile to invest in the system, which can reduce
the return on investment. Furthermore, to maintain customer loyalty and satisfaction, the system should be
supported by the food origin taste and services. However, the widespread adoption of automated canteen
ordering systems may result in an increase in labor due to the loss of servers in the restaurant industry. Even if
the system is essential for implementation, other variables such as direct engagement and restaurant design
concept must be considered to ensure the system's success (Bisong-Abang Anthonia Obanghe, 2020).

The system's primary users will be canteen employees such as cashiers, culinary personnel, and
inventory managers. Canteen managers will also have access to a real-time data analytics platform for business

PURPOSE AND DESCRIPTION

The purpose of this study is to organize transactions, such as inventory management software, which
checks stock levels, generates purchase orders, and informs employees when inventory levels are low. The Sulu
State College canteen system allows users to purchase food and receive it without delay since they can proceed
promptly to the canteen to grab what they requested without waiting for a turn or waiting time. This system is
attempting to accelerate processing orders from customers and the customer order system used by crew
members to receive customer orders. The system's goal is to develop and implement a basic automated canteen
ordering system (Bisong-Abang Anthonia Obanghe, 2020).

The food service industry is constantly evolving, and it is imperative that businesses keep up with the
latest trends and technologies to remain competitive. Sulu State College's canteen is no exception. In this essay,
we will examine the benefits of implementing a Point of Sale (POS) and Inventory System in the canteen, as
well as the integration of QR codes and Real-Time Data Analytics. By revolutionizing their food services, Sulu
State College can improve their inventory management, transaction processing, and customer experience. The
current manual system in the Sulu State College canteen poses several limitations and challenges. Manual
inventory management is prone to errors, making it difficult to track stock levels accurately. Additionally,
transaction processing can be slow and inefficient, leading to long queues and dissatisfied customers. By
implementing a digital system, the canteen can improve inventory management, transaction processing, and data
analytics.

OBJECTIVES

This study aims to enhance the canteen's operations, improve customer satisfaction, and provide valuable
insights for business-decision making. These objectives include:

i. To improve inventory management, accelerate canteen tasks, and provide real-time data analytics that
will help decision-making processes.
ii. To manage transactions, such as inventory management software monitors stock levels, provides
purchase orders, and notifies personnel when inventory levels are low.
iii. To collects and processes data on sales, inventory levels, and customer behavior in real time to provide
insights into canteen operations.
iv. To reduce time and cost to control and manage inventory and minimizes the prospect of human error
while also accelerating the inventory management process.

SCOPE AND LIMITATIONS

The scope of this study is to improve inventory management, enhance canteen tasks, and provide real-
time data analytics to aid decision-making processes. This includes managing transactions such as inventory
management software, which monitors stock levels, provides purchase orders, and notifies personnel when
inventory levels are low. It also collects and processes data on sales, inventory levels, and customer behavior
in real time to provide insights into canteen operations. To reduce the time and expenses associated with
inventory control and management, as well as to reduce the possibility of human error while also increasing
the inventory management process. Reduce transaction time, minimize errors, and enhance staff efficiency.

The limitation of the study could be the system's development will be based on an offline system or a
window-based system that does not require an internet connection to operate. To get started with implementing
the system, gather information about the products and services required from the owner to determine the
feasibility of designing the system for Sulu State College Canteen. In the first half of the project, the process for
determining the approaches and tools to be employed will take place. Along with it, the system's interface will
be designed. The second half of the project will focus mostly on installing and testing the system till it is
finished. This project is expected to take around 8 months to complete (Rahmat Bee Abdul Aleem, 2013).
