In all the following exercises, you need
to:

1. Sketch, if necessary (especially in geometric shapes or boxes)

2. Secondary equation, if necessary
3. Primary equation
4. First derivative of the primary equation
5. ID-test of the primary equation
6. Calculate the optimizes values
7. Explain in words your answer
1. Find two positive numbers whose sum is 135, and the product of the square of the first one times the
second one is a maximum.
x=90, y=45, fmax=364,500
2. A rectangle has a perimeter of 20 m. Write the area of the rectangle in function of one of the sides. Find
the maximum area
x=5m, y=5m, Amax=25m2
3. A rectangle has 16 square meters of area. Express the perimeter of the rectangle in function of one side.
Find the minimum perimeter.
x=4m, y=4m, Pmin=16m
4. Find the dimensions that use the minimum amount of material to construct an open box with square base
and that has a volume of 4m3.
x=2, y=1, Samin=12
5. A rectangular box with an open top is to be made from a 10in x 16in piece of cardboard by removing small
squares of equal size from the corners and folding up the remaining sides. What should be the size of the
squares cut from the corners so that the box will have the largest possible volume? (Disregard the
thickness of the cardboard).
V= (16-2x)(10-2x)(x) V’= 160-104x+12x^3 Vmax=
144in^3
= (16-2x)(10x-2x2) X= 2 máx a= 12
=160x-32x^2-20x^2+4x^3 X= 20/3 b= -104
V= 160x-52x^2+4x^3 V´(1)= + V´(3)= - c= 160

6. An orchard presently has 30 trees per acre. Each tree yields 400 peaches. It is determined that each
additional tree that is planted per acre, the yield will be reduced by 20 peaches per tree. How many trees
should be added per acre to maximize the yield.

7. A rectangular box with square base is made by 3 types of wood. The top is made of wood costing 10 dollars
per square foot, the base is made of wood costing 5 dollars per square foot and the remaining is made of
wood costing 3 dollars per square foot. Find the minimum cost of the box depending of one side. The
volume of box is 350 cubic foot.

V= 350ft^2 = L . w . h = L^2 . h
C= 10 . L^2
8. A farmer has 100 meters of fencing wire, with which he wants to build two adjacent pens, as shown in the
figure. What are the dimensions of the pens to enclose the maximum area?
