PCA-Human Resource Frame Worksheet

Worksheet Objectives:
1. Describe the human resource frame
2. Apply the human resource frame to your personal case situation

Complete the following making sure to support your ideas and cite from the textbook and other
course materials per APA guidelines. After the peer review, you have a chance to update this and
format for your Electronic Portfolio due in Module 6.

1) Briefly restate your situation from Module 1 and your role.

During my term as Student President I worked with five other student officers to
plan, host and run Student Life events for JohnWood Community College. I ran monthly
meetings with the entire organization and led weekly officers meetings. I was also office
manager for the student life administrator. The monthly meetings followed an agenda
where we talked about the larger events we were planning, the calendar for the following
month, and any feedback from the students. At each meeting the officers gave individual
reports on what they were working on. At our weekly meetings we worked on the
logistics for each event and who was in charge of what tasks. We also brainstormed for
new events and ideas to bring to our monthly meetings. As office manager, I worked
directly with our faculty advisor and most of my tasks aligned with my responsibilities as
president. I would create promotional materials for events, buy any product we needed
for events, create the agendas for officer and full group meetings, meet with faculty to
discuss Covid-19 guidelines and manage the food pantry deliveries for any students in
need.

The biggest obstacle we faced that year was the pandemic and how to operate
under a new light, as did many other organizations. We wanted to maintain all the regular
meetings as well as the average of 10 events each month. The restrictions were
continuously changing due to higher cases in our area, so we were constantly coming up
with new ideas on how to get people together, but apart. We were determined to keep a
steady number of active members in SGA because most members were academic
scholarship students. Scholarship student’s two main requirements were to maintain a 3.0
GPA and be a member of SGA. To keep your attendance in SGA it was a requirement to
be at every monthly meeting and attend a minimum of two events per month. We wanted
to plan enough events to give plenty of options for students to choose from to meet their
requirements.

2) Describe how the human resources of the organization influenced the situation.

I would consider the Dean of Students and School Board as our Human Resources
for this situation. We were given the Covid-9 guidelines through them and they
re-enforced what these expectations were. This highly affected what we were able to do
each month and it sometimes felt like we were constantly fighting over what was deemed
safe for the students. We would come up with ideas that followed the guidelines and
check with our dean if she agreed and most of the time she would say no so we would
have to rework our plan. This caused some turmoil between the student officers, our
faculty advisor and the dean.

Some other human resources frame influences were with our roles as officers.
There were some known and informal norms for all officer positions and we all had to
work together to figure out what worked best for our group. Each officer had their own
job duties that were clearly outlined from the beginning of the semester but then along
the way we created our informal norms. If someone was not following these informal
norms there would be some tension between us as a group. This made it difficult to focus
on the work right in front of us because someone was mad at someone else. This was
common because we were also all sophomores in college in leadership positions for the
first time.

3) Recommend how you would use the human resources for an alternative course of
action regarding your case.

I wish I would have known about Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs when working
with my officers and fellow students. I would have addressed them and my position
differently if I had a better understanding of human needs. Understanding the needs of
my dean, advisor, officers and fellow students would have impacted the way I interacted
with them. Being able to motivate students based on their needs could have encouraged
them to show up for events more and find more experiences within Student Life.

Sharing the knowledge of Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs with my officers could

have also allowed us to come up with event ideas that aligned with these needs. For
example during finals week, we planned distressing events for students to find some
moments of relaxation to help keep them calm for finals. We could have planned more
events based on what was going on with classes and what students' needs were. This
could have boosted morale with students and encouraged them to participate more every
month.

4) Reflect on what you would do or not do differently given what you have learned
about this frame.

2
I would have communicated more directly with our dean about the Covid-19
guidelines instead of through our advisor. All the information came to us from the dean
through our advisor because that was the line of power. When we would get frustrated
with the guidelines we would take it out on our advisor because he was the one relaying
the message. I also think there were some ideas that our advisor denied without talking to
the dean because he thought she would say no. I wish I would have gone to her directly
for an answer because you never know the answer until you ask.
