Background
During servicing of some S-separators, the screws securing the Operating slide Holder to the Bowl body
have been found to be loose.
The screws can, if it comes to the worst, break off and cause the Holder and the Operating slide to
disengage from the rotating bowl.
The Holder and the Operating slide could then rotate down on the Spindle, destroy the cast iron Frame
bottom part and possibly cause personal injury.

Actions
The screws for the Holder and the Operating water ring have been replaced by screws with a higher
material strength (BUMAX 10.9), and a lock washer (NORD LOCK) has to be used on every screw for the
Operating slide Holder.

Important
The screws and lock washers must be exchanged every 4000 hours, i.e. at the Inspection
Service, which is why the Inspection Service kits from Alfa Laval since 2005 contain a new set of screws
and lockers.
Used screws and washers must not be used for reassembly.
The reason for not re-using the screws and washers is the working principle of the washers. The force on
the screw is greater when disassembled than assembled meaning that the screws are stretched during
disassembly. This working principle safeguards that the screws cannot loosen during operation.
We also must warn users of non-original spare parts, that correct parts may not be included
in the delivery of service kits from such suppliers. Consequently the old screws/lockers will never be
replaced by correct parts.
The screws require a tightening torque according to the table below.

Note: Always use a torque wrench for correct fit. Part number for the Torque wrench is 544371 01.
The screws and lock washers must be exchanged every 4000 hours, i.e. at the Inspection Service.

Lock washer
The Lock washer is pair glued according to the picture below. The two washer pieces must not be
separated from each other.

Lock washers must be used on the screws for the Holder:
