Describe a career for the future - titles, tasks, industry, salary (if available) and
explain why you would like to work in this field
TITLE

Robotic Engineers are certified professional engineers meaning that they are given the title
of 'professional engineer' (PE) in their specialised work environment when they are licensed.

TASKS

Robotic Engineers conduct many tasks that include the following of:
collaborations with fellow engineers, developers, project managers, stake holders and
clients to understand the overall scope and the requirements of the robotics project
building and designing robotic prototypes using the computer-aided manufacture of
parts and assemblies
ensuring that robotic machines operate safely, dependably, and with precision;
identifying and implementing modifications.
Provides technical support and troubleshooting services for robotic systems.
documentation of development process, modifications, maintenance
Assists with cost estimates and project calculations.
INDUSTRY

Robotics are present in a diverse range of industries meaning that engineers could work in
laboratories and production facilities for companies in the manufacturing, mining, aviation,
defence and automotive industries.
SALARY

In Australia, the average annual salary for a Robotics Engineer can range from $80,000 to
$100,000.
PERSONAL PASSION

As stated above in [3], Robotics Engineers generally receive a stable, lucrative salary even in
entry-level positions. Being a career that requires extensive education, Robotic engineering
is a competitive field that is filled with opportunities to advance one’s position and earnings
in the work field, enabling one to receive widespread recognition due to the high demand
across all industries as technology advances. Robotics are present in a diverse range of
industries, giving opportunities for potential career advancement and options to work in
many industries, helping an individual work within an area of passion in one’s career. Aside
from the advantageous title the occupation receives, many engineers find that the creative
freedom of engineering sows the passion for the job, expressing oneself freely within the
project. Satisfaction and fulfilment stems from the full creative liberties engineering offers
whilst identifying unique problems, imaging design solutions, creating designs and finally
holding physical results from the hardworking process.

BEING FUTURE PROOF

The Fourth Industrial Revolution is slowly approaching, sweeping transformation to the way
people live and work. In this era, people are increasingly powered by advanced technologies
such as artificial intelligence, quantum computing, automation and robotics, in which all
industries are in for new opportunities or disruptions. To prepare for this envisioned future,
robotics engineering is an important degree to pursue as several industries, such as
healthcare, education, and medicine, offer excellent career opportunities for graduates in
this field. It was predicted in the 'Future of Jobs report' in 2018 by the 'World Economic
Forum' that companies across all sectors would use stationary robots rather than humanoids,
aerial robots, and underwater robots.
According to 'Sokanu', the robotics industry is expected to grow by 6.4% between 2016 and
2026, in which the demand for automation and robotics will continue to fuel these high-
paying jobs, expecting to continue for the foreseeable future.
Top tech companies are constantly racing to change the way robotics are implemented in
everyday life, leading to an adventurous future. For example, robotics can be featured in
public security, education, at home, for entertainment, healthcare, as coworkers and in
general boosting the standard of living for humanity. This is where Robotics Engineers come
in, building and creating new prototypes of robots, helping to develop the future as
technology advances.

Describe the skills and personal attributes needed for this career, which skills and
attributes you will need to develop and how you will do this
MATH

In robotics engineering, assessment and troubleshooting of robotic equipment is a major

activity, which requires a solid knowledge of algebra, calculus, geometry and physics.
Engineers use these skills to analyse abstract concepts related to how robots work, learning
how they move and establishing how to predict robot movements under certain
circumstances.

TEAMWORK

Several soft skills are utilised by Robotic Engineers, including active listening and
communication skills, as they work with other engineers, product developers, managers and
other members of the robotics team. These skills help Robotic Engineers to contribute
efficiently and perform effectively within a group.

PPROGRAMMING

Another important skill for Robotics Engineers is understanding programming languages, for
example Python and Java. Through these programs, robots that work in correlation with
electronics, software and hardware are created.

DECISION MAKING

Various decisions related to the creation and the conception process of robots are made
constantly. Efficient decision-making skills can help Robotics Engineers determine these
aspects to build a robot effectively.

PROBLEM SOLVING

The main use of robotic engineers is to build robotic equipment and much of their time is
spent trouble shooting it. This requires strong problem-solving skills to identify any issues
with the robots and to devise solutions to solve these issues.
There are several different ways to improve these skills and personal attributes needed for
this career. For example:

ONLINE COURSES

There are several courses available teaching valuable skills required for successful robotics
engineering.
MENTORING

Working with a more experienced Robotics Engineer can be a great way to improve robotics
engineering skills. A mentor can give guidance, teaching the necessary skills for the robotics
industry.
APPLICATION

Regularly applying known skills can help strengthen these skills. Focusing on one skill to
apply and moving to the next once one is established can be very helpful.
ACCOUNTABILITY

A great way to improve skills is staying accountable for learning the skills. This is by regularly
checking in with progress to monitor growth and making changes when necessary.
