CAE Listening Part 4

Find the theme – look at the first sentence in the question

Underline keywords

Use your time to read as much of a-H as you can – underline possible synonyms. (Remember they
will not repeat exactly what you read on your paper)

Listen to the speakers tone and opinion, then analyse what each speaker has said – What was their
main point, idea or feeling?

Develop a strategy – You can do both parts at once and review all answers the second time you
listen, you can do part one or part two first and then the other part the second time you listen. Try
and you’ll know what works for you.

Expect to hear different accents and informal dialogues.

Become comfortable with gist – you’ll need to identify the overall meaning from each speaker

Listening for words that indicate change (linking words or conjuctions) e.g. that’s why, since then,
therefore, although, despite etc.
