~ PETITION — Historic District Businesses The undersigned strongly object to the proposed Walnut Street Garage (WSG) replacement pian proposed by the City and Bethlehem Parking Authority (BPA). This plan would downsize the WSG by 180 parking spaces 8 @ result of reducing the footprint and locating it away from Main Street closer to New Street. This shift in urban planning challenges convenient parking for our primary shopping district, particularty the Main Street businesses, whose viability is threatened by this proposal The proposed reduction in the proposed garage footprint will make way for a preferred developer to build a high-rise mixed use apartment building on a large portion of the current garage footprint closest to Main Street. The additional demand for permit parking from this proposed apartment building will further magnity the problem by significantly reducing the remaining parking spaces available to Main Street visitors. This will negatively impact the shopping/dinit nce In the Historic Business District during critical high demand days that are so critical to the viability of our independent businesses, The city administration has prioritized residential apartments versus providing adequate convenient parking for high demand event days and future heritage tourists. We do not disagree that more people living downtown has economic advantages but definitely NOT in this particular sensitive location. Therefore we recommend a “rebuild in kind!” of the current WSG on the same footprint with the following actions to address the economic development initiatives espoused by the administration: 1. Move the high-rise planned apartment building to the Broad/Long Streets BPA owned lot; and 2.
