INTRODUCTION
In the realm of written communication, four distinct styles of writing coexist, each with
its unique purpose and characteristics. These are Descriptive, Narrative, Informative, and
Definitive writing.

DESCRIPTIVE WRITING

Descriptive writing, the first of the quartet, is akin to an artist. She paints with words,
creating vivid, immersive experiences. Her canvas is the reader’s mind, where she sketches
characters, events, or places in great detail. She employs sensory language, figurative
expressions, and precise adjectives and verbs to create her masterpiece. Her ultimate goal is
not just to describe but to evoke an emotional response, making the reader feel a certain way
about what’s being described.

NARRATIVE WRITING

Next, we have Narrative writing, the raconteur of the group. He is a master storyteller,
spinning tales that are real or imagined. His stories have a clear beginning, middle, and end,
and are populated with interesting characters. He sets his tales in diverse settings and uses
dialogue to reveal character traits and advance the plot. His stories are designed to entertain,
inform, or engage the reader, making them feel as if they are part of the narrative.

INFORMATIVE WRITING

Then there’s Informative writing, the educator of the group. She is all about clarity,
accuracy, and objectivity. Her mission is to educate and inform, presenting facts and
information in a straightforward and concise manner. She maintains an objective tone,
presenting facts and information without personal bias or opinion. She relies on evidence and
reliable sources to support the information presented, ensuring that the information is reliable
and trustworthy.

DEFINITIVE WRITING
Finally, we have Definitive writing, the expert of the group. He provides precise
definitions or explanations of terms, concepts, or ideas. His writing is authoritative and
comprehensive, leaving no room for ambiguity or confusion. He focuses on providing clear
and concise definitions, aiming for precision and clarity. He explores different aspects or
dimensions of the topic to ensure a thorough and complete explanation.

Together, these four styles of writing form the backbone of written communication.
Whether it’s a novel, a newspaper article, a textbook, or a legal document, you can be sure
that one or more of these styles of writing is at play, helping to convey ideas, tell stories, and
share information. They each have their own strengths and weaknesses, but together, they
create a rich and diverse world of words and ideas.
