Anodizing the DC bus capacitors in controllers

Anodizing the DC bus capacitors

 Please read these instructions and the documentation of the standard device before you
start working!
Observe the safety instructions given therein!

 Stop!
Specific commissioning procedure after long-term storage
If controllers have been stored for over 2 years, their DC bus capacitors may have dried up.
Possible consequences:
ƒ At initial switch-on the DC bus capacitors, and thus the controller is damaged.
Protective measures:
ƒ Anodize the DC bus capacitors before you connect the controller to the mains.

By the anodizing process the dielectric rebuilds within the capacitors. Thus the capacitors can be
regenerated.
ƒ An anodizing process can take several hours.

Preliminary operations
1. Set up the circuit for anodizing the DC bus capacitors.
2. Connect the output of the circuit to the DC bus of the controller (+UG, -UG).
3. Set the resistance R to the maximum value (1 kΩ).
4. Determine the permissible residual current I0 of the DC bus capacitors.
– Select the current characteristic from the chart according to the rated voltage and the rated
power Pr of the controller.
– Read the residual current I0.

How to anodize the capacitors

1. Switch on the mains voltage via the motor protection switch Q.
2. Measure the current IE by means of the current measuring device.
3. If IE < 3 × I0, decrease the resistance R until IE = 3 × I0.
4. Wait until the current IE ≤ I0 is reached.
– If the current IE ≤ I0 is not reached, the DC bus capacitors cannot be regenerated. Cancel the
anodizing process and send the controller to the Lenze service.
5. Further decrease the resistance R until the current IE corresponds to IE = 3 × I0 again.
6. Repeat steps 4. and 5. until the resistance R = 0 Ω is set.
– If the current IE ≤ I0 is reached, the anodizing process is completed. The controller can be
connected to the mains.
– If the current IE ≤ I0 is not reached, the DC bus capacitors cannot be regenerated. Cancel the
anodizing process and send the controller to the Lenze service. By no means connect the
controller to the mains.
