Making the Transition
Transitioning from high school to college can
be a big change, both academically and
socially. Adjusting to this new life can be
scary at first, but we believe in you and know
you will succeed ☺

Our College Advice:

to establish a solid support network
that you can rely on (Friends, family,
professors, advisors, etc.). Don't be

your first year, don't try to overload your
schedule. Maintaining a balance between
classes, involvements, and socials is super
important for your mental health and
enjoying your college experience. Nobody
can do it all and that is OKAY! 4

Our Top 3 UC Apps:
1. UC Mobile
This app has it all! UC Mobile has maps of every UC campus, student news, and an
updated menu of what's being served at every dining hall!
2. Double Maps
Double Maps shows real-time bus routes, including buses to med campus, CCHMC,
Blue Ash, and more!
3. UC Night Ride
Night Ride is UC's version of Uber and will pick you up and drop you off anywhere
within a mile radius of campus. This is a great resource to ensure you make it back
to your dorm safely from wherever you are!

Our Favorite Academic Resources:

Office Hours
Your professors are there to help you! Going to office hours is one of the best ways to get help with a
class because you are usually one on one with your professor and can ask about specific questions or
topics from lecture.
Academic Writing Center
The Academic Writing Center is located in Langsam Library and will review your essays for any class!
ENED Tutoring
Every first year engineering student at UC is required to take ENED. While the course contents can be
challenging, CEAS has set-up specific tutoring for the class. ENED teaching assistants (TAs) have certain
hours that they are in Baldwin to help with ENED homework or your robot project. Be on the lookout for
posted tutoring hours at the beginning of the semester!
CAPS
Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) is here to help you during your college career. They offer
free support with mental health relative concerns and strive to make getting help inclusive and
accessible.
MASS Center
The Math and Science Support (MASS) Center offer free peer tutoring and study tables for
undergraduate math and science courses. You will find upperclassmen who have already taken the
class ready to help, and meet students currently in your class to form study groups with!
SI Sessions
General education classes, like general chemistry, physics, and calculus, each have dedicated
Supplemental Instruction (SI) sessions. These are students who have previously taken, and done well in,
the class you are taking. They host weekly review sessions to cover topics from that week's lecture and
offer a more relaxed environment to ask questions and get clarity. Most SI's will also host mock exams
the week of an exam, which is a great way to test what you know!

All Things UC SWE

When it comes to college advice, you've probably

heard the same thing many times... get involved!
Getting involved with campus organizations is truly
one of the best ways to meet other students and
grow your network. We recommend at least one
club to help you grow professionally, and one club
that sounds fun!

We might be bias, but SWE is the best of both

worlds! We present professional development
topics at meetings and host fun events to
interact with other members.

The Society of Women Engineers is an organization that aims to

promote, support, and encourage women in engineering and
technology fields. We offer professional development, mentoring,
social activities, and volunteer opportunities to help you succeed in
every aspect of your undergrad career!

History of UC SWE

The Society of Women of Engineers (SWE) was founded in 1950 as a service organization
to empower women to succeed in the engineering industry. The not-for-profit's first
president was Dr. Beatrice Hicks. Since its founding, the organization has grown to
support over 40,000 members at collegiate and professional levels

Cheryll A. Dunn founded the University of Cincinnati chapter of SWE in 1976. Dunn earned
bachelor's degrees in Chemical Technology and Vocational Education. She continued her
education at UC receiving a Master of Education and a Doctorate. While a student, she dedicated
time towards developing a community for future female engineers. Since the establishment of
SWE at the University of Cincinnati, the organization has grown into a community that supports
personal and professional growth for women entering a STEM career.

The University of Cincinnati currently offers a wide range of majors within the College of
Engineering and Applied Science. SWE has always welcomed and worked with women in all the
offered majors!

UC SWE belongs to region G053 and is 1 out of 300 collegiate chapters. For
decades, UC SWE has participated in National and Regional conferences. SWE
encourages participation in conferences and various other networking events. UC
SWE continues to promote "advancement of women in engineering academically,
professionally and socially while encouraging the development of leadership
characteristics.”

Take a look at our fun activities hosted annually!

WiE Welcome Event

UC SWE and the department of Women In
Engineering (WiE) host a welcome event the
first week of classes to meet other female
engineering students and female based
organizations. The event is complete with
raffles, games, and an ice cream truck!

SWE Week
Each year, our recruitment chair
hosts SWE week, a week long event
to promote our organization to UC
students. There are different crafty
activities each night and is a great
way to meet newer SWE members!

Special Events
Our special events chairs work hard to
plan fun, festive events throughout the
year. Previous events include
HalloSWEen, Galentine's Day, Movie
Nights, and scavenger hunts!

Bake Sales E-Week/CharitE Week Teams

CEAS hosts E-Week every spring and CharitE-Week
Our fundraising team holds a bake every fall. This is a week long friendly competition,

More Fun SWE Events!

Conferences
SWE hosts two conferences each year, a societal conference in the fall (one large
conference for SWE sections across the country) and local conferences in the
spring (a few smaller conferences spread out across the country).

UC SWE attends both conferences annually and aims to take as many members as
possible, fully funded! These conferences are filled with incredible keynote
speakers, professional development sessions, and a lot of fun exploring new cities!

This fall UC SWE will be attending WE22 in Houston, TX and in the spring we will
attend WELocal in Detroit, MI! In the next few years, SWE conferences will be held in
Los Angeles, Chicago, and New Orleans. If this sounds like something you are
interested in, make sure to stay up to date with UC SWE emails!

Evening With Industry

One of our largest events each semester is Evening With
Industry (EWI). This event is put on the week of the technical
career fair and gives you the chance to talk to company
representatives outside of the career fair.

At EWI, attendees are served dinner and given the opportunity to ask questions to
employers, whether it's advice for the career fair or interest in their company. EWI is a great
way for students to network and learn about companies they may co-op for. Some girls
have even been offered interviews from seeing employers and both EWI and the career fair!

In past semesters, we have had company representatives from GE Aviation, Marathon

Petroleum, Teva Pharmaceuticals, Dow Chemicals, Procter and Gamble, Turner
Construction, and more!
