I’m Dora. Life is very different now. When I look back on the past, I can see that things change very
quickly. I was born and grew up in a small village. My childhood passed without technology. There
wasn’t electricity, so we needed to try very hard to survive. I still remember my first day at school.
Our village didn’t have a school, so my parents took me to one of the primary schools in the town.
We didn’t have a car or a horse-drawn carriage to travel. We walked eight kilometres every weekday
to get to school. I wasn’t the only one in this situation. All children in our village were the same. At
that time, everything seemed normal. As kids we were very strong and happy. I still cherish my
childhood memories. Doing my homework by the light of a gas lamp at night was fun for me. Now we
have electricity which is more useful. People use washing machines to wash their dirty clothes, they
watch television to entertain themselves and there are cars and school buses to go to work or school.

LISTENING SCRIPT
Hello, I’m Peggy. We live in a modern world, but sadly many people still live in bad conditions in
different parts of the world. Two years ago, I travelled to Africa with my uncle for a project. We
stayed in a village for two months. The villagers didn’t use any modern devices or household
appliances because there wasn’t electricity. They used gas lamps and washed their clothes by hand.
My uncle and I did the same things. It was a great experience for both of us to learn how to survive
without technology. I made some friends in the village who taught me many valuable life lessons.
They were all very kind and hospitable. Now when I look back, I can understand how hard life was for
them. I want to work very hard to help people in need. A simple step can make a huge difference.
