Using this file

You are able to print and photocopy these pages for your
non-commercial classroom and home use.

This packet will complement a unit of work on exploring numbers up to 100.

Students will partition quantities into tens and ones, write 2 digit numbers, work with tens and
ones, work with a numeral expander and analyze 2 digit numbers (in terms of tens and ones).

This activity pack has been designed to use alongside structured lessons or programs. All activities
are optimal when completed in a small group lesson format.

Equipment

Game Mat per player


Small equipment - buttons, tokens or blocks

Purpose

Students will make groups of ten.


Students will partition a quantity into tens and ones.

How to play:
Students can play in a small group. There is no winner, just lots of practice and fun!

Students take a game mat and a small scoop of equipment pieces from a central pile. They
have a guess how many ‘tens and ones’ will be in their scoop.

Encourage students to ‘count by ten’ to check their estimate.

They place their equipment in groups of ten on the robot and any loose ones at the base in the
white squares.

Students then describe their collection - “I have 3 tens and 6 ones on my robot’.

Numeral expander per student
Dry Erase Marker

Purpose

Students will make groups of tens and ones.


Students will partition a quantity into tens and ones.
Students will write to record a 2 digit number as tens and ones.
How to play:
Students can play in a small group. There is no winner, just lots of practice and fun!

Students take a small bundle of counting cubes They have a guess how many ‘tens and ones’ will
be in their bundle.

Encourage students to ‘count by tens’, joining the cubes into rows of ten if possible, to check their
estimate.

They record their tens and ones on their laminated numeral expander and fold it to create the
2 digit number.

Students then record their actions on a recording page.

Train card per player
Dry Erase Marker

Purpose

Students will make groups of tens and ones.


Students will partition a quantity into tens and ones.
Students will write 2 or 3 digit numbers.
How to play:
Students can play in a small group. There is no winner, just lots of practice and fun!

Students take a small bundle of counting cubes They have a guess how many ‘tens and ones’ will
be in their bundle.

Students sort their bundle into groups of ten and position each ten on the train. The remaining
ones can go in the final carriage on the train.

Encourage students to swap each of their collections of ten ones, for a ten block. They can then
find the total and record it with a dry erase marker on their train card.

Students may record their actions on a recording page if desired.

Numeral Cards
Ten Frame Cards

Purpose

Students will make numbers using pictures of tens and ones.


Students will partition a quantity into tens and ones.

How to play:
Students can play in a small group. There is no winner, just lots of practice and fun!

Numeral cards are placed face down in the middle of the playing area. Students take a card
and identify the number.

Using the ten frame cards they build the number shown on their numeral card. A peer can check
their work for accuracy.

Students take a new numeral card and change their ten frames to match the new number.

Purpose

Students will recognize place value pictures of 2 digit numbers.

How to play:
Students can play in a small group.

Numeral cards are placed face down in the middle of the playing area. Students take turns to
take a card and identify the number.

Any player with this number on their game board may cover it with a counter/chip.

The first player to cover all his/her numbers may be declared the winner.
