The Aqeedah of An-Nawawi

“Whoever praises a person of innovation, he has indeed aided


in the destruction of Islam. And whoever smiles in the face of an
innovator, he has belittled what Allah, the Almighty, has
revealed to Muhammad (peace be upon him). Whoever marries
his daughter to an innovator, he has severed ties with her. And
whoever goes to the funeral of an innovator will remain under
the wrath of Allah until he goes back.”1

An-Nawawi denied the aboveness of Allah2, the place of


Allah3, and that Allah resides in the Samaa (aboveness)4.
Additionally, he rejected the concept of hadd (limit; Allah being
in a specific place and not every place)5 and that Allah exists
outside of creation6. Other attributes he denied include the

descent of Allah7, coming of Allah8, the right hand of Allah9,


seeing Allah10, the image of Allah11, the face of Allah12, and that
Allah is beautiful13. Furthermore, An-Nawawi denied the eyes of
Allah14, the attribute of sight15, the hand of Allah16, the grasping
of Allah17, the fingers of Allah18, the shin of Allah19, the leg20,
and the foot of Allah21, and even that Allah laughs22.
