Not including the hijackers, the attacks killed
2,977 people, injured thousands more and
gave rise to substantial long-term health
consequences while also causing at least $10
billion in infrastructure and property damage. It
is the deadliest terrorist attack in history and
the deadliest incident for firefighters and law
enforcement personnel in US history, killing
343 and 72 members, respectively. The loss of
life stemming from the impact of Flight 11
secured its place as the most lethal plane crash
in aviation history followed by the death toll
incurred by Flight 175. The destruction of the
World Trade Center and its environs seriously
harmed the U.S. economy and induced global
market shocks. Many other countries
strengthened anti-terrorism legislation and
expanded their powers of law enforcement and
intelligence agencies. Cleanup of the World
Trade Center site (colloquially "Ground Zero")
took eight months and was completed in May
2002, while the Pentagon was repaired within a
year. After delays in the design of a
replacement complex, construction of the One
World Trade Center began in November 2006;
it opened in November 2014. Memorials to the
attacks include the National September 11
Memorial & Museum in New York City, The
Pentagon Memorial in Arlington County,
Virginia, and the Flight 93 National Memorial at
the Pennsylvania crash site.

Most of those who perished were civilians
except for 343 members of the New York
City Fire Department and 71 law
enforcement officers who died in the
World Trade Center and on the ground in
New York City;[10] a United States Fish
and Wildlife Service Office of Law
Enforcement officer who died when
United Airlines Flight 93 crashed into a
field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania;[11]
55 military personnel who died at the
Pentagon in Arlington County, Virginia;
[12] and the 19 terrorists who died on
board the four aircraft. At least 102
countries lost citizens in the attacks.[13]

Initially, a total of 2,603 victims were
confirmed to have been killed at the
World Trade Center site.[16] In 2007, the
New York City medical examiner's office
began to add people who died of
illnesses caused by exposure to dust
from the site to the official death toll. The
first such victim was a woman, a civil
rights lawyer, who had died from a
chronic lung condition in February
2002.In September 2009, the office
added a man who died in October 2008,
[18] and in 2011, a male accountant who
had died in December 2010.This is what
raises the number of victims from the
World Trade Center site to 2,606,and the
overall 9/11 death toll to 2,996.

The September 11 attacks, commonly
known as 9/11,[d] were four coordinated
Islamist suicide terrorist attacks carried
out by al-Qaeda against the United
States in 2001. That morning, 19
terrorists hijacked four commercial
airliners scheduled to travel from the
New England and Mid-Atlantic regions of
the East Coast to California. The
hijackers crashed the first two planes
into the Twin Towers of the World Trade
Center in New York City, two of the
world's five tallest buildings at the time,
and aimed the next two flights toward
targets in or near Washington, D.C., in
an attack on the nation's capital. The
third team succeeded in crashing into the
Pentagon, the headquarters of the U.S.
Department of Defense in Arlington
County, Virginia, while the fourth plane
crashed in rural Pennsylvania following a
passenger revolt. The attacks killed
nearly 3,000 people and instigated the
multi-decade global war on terror.
The first impact was that of American
Airlines Flight 11, which ringleader
Mohamed Atta crashed into the North
Tower of the World Trade Center
complex in Lower Manhattan at 8:46
a.m.[e] Sixteen minutes later, at 9:03,[f]
the World Trade Center's South Tower
was hit by United Airlines Flight 175.
Both 110-story skyscrapers collapsed
within an hour and forty-one minutes,[g]
bringing about the destruction of the
remaining five structures in the WTC
complex and damaging or destroying
nearby buildings. A third flight, American
Airlines Flight 77, crashed into the
Pentagon at 9:37 a.m., causing a partial
collapse. The fourth and final flight,
United Airlines Flight 93, flew in the
direction of the capital. Alerted to the
previous attacks, the passengers
retaliated in an attempt to take control of
the aircraft, forcing the hijackers to crash
the plane in a Stonycreek Township field,
near Indian Lake and Shanksville, at
10:03 a.m. Investigators determined that
Flight 93's target was either the United
States Capitol or the White House.

An annual ceremony to remember those who
died on September 11, 2001, was held in
lower Manhattan on Monday, 22 years after
the World Trade Center's Twin Towers
collapsed in the deadliest terrorist attack on
U.S. soil.
Vice President Kamala Harris joined other
dignitaries Monday at the site, where victims'
relatives read the names of the dead.
Ceremonies were also held at the Pentagon
and in Shanksville, Pennsylvania.
There were also memorial ceremonies being
held elsewhere, including at firehouses and
city halls. President Biden delivered remarks
to service members, first responders and their
families at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson
in Anchorage, Alaska, on his way back from
Vietnam to Washington. He is the first
president to miss a ceremony at one of the
three memorial sites on 9/11.

One story that made headlines turned out to
be a lie, fabricated by Tania Head who rose to
fame in the aftermath of 9/11. For years,
Tania maintained her elaborate story, adding
details that eventually stopped adding up to
those who had really survived the attacks on
the World Trade Center.

"Let us honor September 11 by renewing our
faith in one another," Mr. Biden said in
Anchorage. "Let us remember who we are as
a nation. We never forget. We're never afraid.
We endure. We overcome."
The attack prompted numerous memorials
and services all over the world with many
countries, along with the United States,
declaring a national day of mourning. In
Berlin, 200,000 Germans marched to show
their solidarity with America.[citation needed]
The French newspaper of record, Le Monde,
ran a front-page headline reading "Nous
sommes Tous Américains", or "We are all
Americans". In London, the US national
anthem was played at the Changing of the
Guard at Buckingham Palace. (To mark the
Queen's Golden Jubilee, New York City lit the
Empire State Building in purple and gold, to
say "thank you" for this action.)
Tania Head told her life story and the course
of events during the terrorist attack to the
whole world. She was an ardent activist: she
was elected director of the 911 Survivors club,
met with high-profile figures to negotiate the
construction of some new memorial, invested
her money in promoting her club, spoke
publicly, and calmly gave interviews.
Real heroes who went through fire and
trauma believed that their stories of salvation
were not as heroic as Tania’s. The rest of the
survivors of that tragedy envied her, her
perseverance, calmness, and aspiration.
After all, they underwent courses of treatment,
resolved emerging psychological traumas with
professionals, and faced various difficulties.
But it was as if Tana Head didn’t care.

No one survived in, above, or
immediately below the North
Tower's impact zone.The highest
survivors came from Floor 91.
Some 15 people below floor 22
survived the collapse of WTC 1,
later escaping or being rescued
from the rubble.
Only 14 people escaped from the
impact zone of the South Tower
(floors 77 to 85) after it was struck
by United Airlines Flight 175 at 9:03
am, while a further four escaped
from the floors above it.Individuals
escaped from the South Tower
impact zone using stairwell A in the
northwest corner, the only stairwell
left intact after the impact.
Investigators believe that stairwell A
remained passable until the South
Tower collapsed at 9:59 am.
Because of communication
difficulties between 911 operators
and FDNY and NYPD responders,
most of them were unaware that
stairwell A was passable and
instructed survivors above the
impact zone to wait for assistance
by rescue personnel.
Despite the relatively few survivors
from the impact zone and above,
the 9/11 Commission did bring up
the possibility of others who may
have descended from the point of
impact but were unable to make it
all the way down before the tower
collapsed and killed everybody still
within.
Tania's lie unravelled after a New York Times
investigation into her story. The article
revealed how Tania did not work at the World
Trade Center, and that she was not even in
the US when the attacks happened.
Tania's real name in fact was Alicia Esteve
Head. She was a Spanish native enrolled at
the Esade Business School in Barcelona at
the time of the attacks. She was the daughter
of a wealthy Spanish family, and enjoyed a
privileged upbringing in Mallorca.
As details of her elaborate story unfolded,
survivors discussed how they felt conflicted by
her deception. Although horrified by her lies,
those in the Survivors’ Network couldn't
dismiss what she had helped them achieve.
