• Fall of the Berlin Wall: On August 13, 1961, the Communist government of the
German Democratic Republic (GDR, or East Germany) began to build a barbed
wire and concrete “Antifascistischer Schutzwall,” or “antifascist bulwark,”
between East and West Berlin. The official purpose of this Berlin Wall was to
keep Western “fascists” from entering East Germany and undermining the
socialist state, but it primarily served the objective of stemming mass
defections from East to West.
• Collapse of World Trade Center: On
September 11, 2001, the two main towers

Afghanistan and Iraq: Dubbed

Afghanistan was intended to
target terrorist mastermind
Osama bin Laden’s al-Qaida
organization, which was
based in the country, as well
as the extreme
fundamentalist Taliban
government that had ruled
most of the country since
1996 and supported and
protected al-Qaida.
• First African American president in the

over former Massachusetts governor Mitt
Romney.
