Important events of the last decades (from the crisis
of the socialist bloc until today, the digital era).

• Fall of the Berlin Wall: On August 13, 1961, the Communist government of the
German Democratic Republic (GDR, or East Germany) began to build a barbed
wire and concrete “Antifascistischer Schutzwall,” or “antifascist bulwark,”
between East and West Berlin. The official purpose of this Berlin Wall was to
keep Western “fascists” from entering East Germany and undermining the
socialist state, but it primarily served the objective of stemming mass
defections from East to West.
• Collapse of World Trade Center: On
September 11, 2001, the two main towers
of the World Trade Center complex were
each hit by hijacked commercial aircraft as
part of the September 11, 2001 attacks. 2
WTC collapsed to the ground at 9:59 am,
less than an hour after being hit, and 1 WTC
followed at 10:28 am, causing massive
damage to the rest of the complex and
nearby buildings.
• American invasion of
Afghanistan and Iraq: Dubbed
“Operation Enduring
Freedom” in U.S. military
parlance, the invasion of
Afghanistan was intended to
target terrorist mastermind
Osama bin Laden’s al-Qaida
organization, which was
based in the country, as well
as the extreme
fundamentalist Taliban
government that had ruled
most of the country since
1996 and supported and
protected al-Qaida.
• First African American president in the
U.S: Senator Barack Obama of Illinois
was elected president of the United
States over senator John McCain of
Arizona. Obama became the 44th
president, and the first African American
to be elected to that office. He was
subsequently elected to a second term
over former Massachusetts governor Mitt
Romney.
• Death of Osama Bin Laden: In a
daring raid 120 miles, inside
Pakistan, a team of US special
forces flew from Afghanistan to
Bin Laden´s hiding place in the
dead of night. They swooped down
on the compound in stealth
helicopters, swept through the
buildings within the high walled
enclosure and shot dead a total of
five people including Bin Laden.
Globalization
Terrorism
Unipolar World
Digital era

• The digital age or era

is the present time,
in which many things
are done by computer
and large amounts of
information are
available because of
computer technology.
Why did the
globalization emerge?

• Technology,
Multinational
companies, lower
tariffs, improved
transport, labor
mobility, capital
mobility, etcetera.
In most cases, what caused the terrorist´s attacks of XX Century?
In most cases they were because of political goals, third parties and the hunger of power.
How does the end of the Cold War relate
with the Unipolar World?

• The post-Cold War international system is

unipolar: The United States’ defense
spending is “close to half of global military
expenditures; a blue water navy superior to
all others combined; a chance at a splendid
nuclear first strike over its erstwhile foe,
Russia; a defense research and development
budget that is 80 percent of the total
defense expenditures of its most obvious
future competitor, China and unmatched
global power projection capabilities.
How has the Digital Era influenced today's
society?

• In almost everything, we
have computers,
telephones, televisions,
tablets, cellphones,
etcetera. We can not
live with out them, they
are part of our daily
lives, making life easier
than it was before,
giving us firsthand
information and data.
