4 Cold Wave Across the State

Ahmedabad, December 25
The cold wave swept across the state and claimed more than 12 lives in

the different parts of Gujarat. Three persons in Deesa (Banaskantha District); five
persons in ldar (Sabarkantha District); four persons in Bhuj (Kutch) died of severe
cold.
For the past three days, Bhuj has remained the coldest place in the state.

The mercury (temperature) remained. steady at 4% degrees (celsius).


According to district police sources, the body of an unidentified beggar was
found near Deesa town. He died as he was lying in the severe cold. A similar
fate befell to a sixty-year old Kalubhai Nathubhai who was sleeping on the
roadside near ldar town. According to reports reaching hear a farmer named|
Bakabhai Gavari died in Bhuj) because he was sleeping withouta blanket.
The low temperature all over the state has been attributed to the heavy
snowfall in parts of Northern India.
Many places in Saurashtra recorded extremely low temperatures. K had
a low of 7.1 degrees C; Junagadh had 6.1 degrees C. In Ahmedabad, tme day's|
temperature has also remained four degree below normàl over the past couple
of days.
At Kankaria Zoo, the authorities have made special arrangements for
protecting the birds and animals from the acute cold. The main roads of the

city looked deserted after 8.00 p.m.


Many social organizations and religious units organised free distribution of

blankets to the beggars and footpath dwellers.
