WHY NOT TRY … CARIBBEAN FOOD?
Some international food is famous all over the world. You can find Chinese and Italian restaurants
everywhere. Why then, aren’t there more Caribbean restaurants in Europe?
Caribbean food is delicious. 1_____ There are vegetarian dishes for non-meat eaters. There is spicy food
for people who like it. There are a lot of fish recipes, and fruit and vegetables give lots of dishes a
beautiful flavour.
Of course, the Caribbean isn’t just one country. 2_____ Some of them have English as a first language.
Others have a French or Spanish influence and a lot of ideas and ingredients come from Africa.
So, what are some of the most popular dishes? You can find goat curry on many islands. It is spicy and
delicious. Callaloo is another great dish, which comes from Africa. It is a vegetarian dish and a good
example of how different islands have different ideas about their food. On Jamaica, they use callaloo
leaves, salt, onions and green onions to make Callaloo. On Trinidad, they use the leaves from the okra

One meal you have to try is ackee and saltfish. It’s Jamaica’s national meal. Be careful! You have to cook
ackee properly because it can be dangerous. To be safe buy tinned ackee. You can find it at your local
Caribbean food shop or online.
