Text 1
It’s hard to believe that the day is over at last! It’s well after midnight, but I only came home half an hour ago.
I’ve just finished my first day working as a kitchen assistant in a restaurant that belongs to my parents’ friends.
I have to admit that it’s a result of a crazy idea of mine to find a way to improve my cooking skills and earn
some extra money during the summer, but I hadn’t realised what working in a restaurant really involves.
However, I knew it wasn’t going to be easy. I’d assumed it was going to be a long, hard day (I actually finished
working long after the restaurant had closed). I’d also expected lots of odd jobs, from helping
in the preparation of basic meals to washing up the plates, knives and forks and some other kitchen equipment
that I can’t even name. But nothing could have prepared me for the non-stop stress of a modern restaurant
kitchen. My co-workers never seemed to stop shouting or running around. There were quite a few moments
when I wanted to take off my apron, leave the kitchen and never return.
But now, looking back on the day, I think: ‘I’ve never had it so good!’ I’m no longer worried about being careful
(I’ve already got some cuts and burns on my hands) or that I’ll have to be stronger mentally (it felt really bad
when some of the staff were shouting at me). No, these things are not at all important! In fact, I can’t wait
to go back there tomorrow!
1 Nick started a job at a restaurant to earn some money and
a help his parents’ friends.
b learn to cook better.
c find out what working there was like.
d start his own restaurant.

2 Nick was surprised that

a there were so many jobs for him to do.
b he had to work for so many hours.
c the staff were annoyed all the time.
d he had to take off his apron.

3 After his first day at work, Nick wants to

a keep on working in the restaurant.
b ask the staff to be nicer to him.
c make sure he will not cut or burn himself again.
d stop being so careful.
