 Meet the Author and Her Book Ann Grifalconi, writer and illustrator of several
books for children, authored a Caldecott Award-winning book, The Village of
Round and Square Houses.
 When Grifalconi visited Tos, a remote village at the foot of Naka Mountain of
Cameroon in Central Africa, the tale of people who lived in round and square
houses caught her interest. Told in rhythmic storytelling from the viewpoint of a
little girl who grew up in Tos, the author has turned the story into an exquisitely
 beautiful and appealing book. This book tells the story of two houses that
remained intact after a volcanic eruption that burned the village.
 Grifalconi elaborates on the customs of the village using melodious narration.
Here, the author-illustrator brilliantly captures the sleeping purple volcano that
suddenly turned into a fiery orange mound, the eerie orange sun, the purple and
orange skies, the ash-covered villagers, and the dark, lush jungles.
 While it is regarded as an African folktale, the story is actually inspired by an
event that transpired many years ago. It is a long poem written as a rhythmical
free verse. The teacher will introduce Ann Grifalconi, writer and illustrator of
several books for children, authored a Caldecott Award-winning book, The
Village of Round and Square Houses and discuss the story.
The Village of Round and Square Houses

It was not until I was full-grown; And Left my village That I found our village was like no other.
For the men live in square houses, And the women, in round ones! To me, this seemed the natural
order of things. “But what is it like?” You ask. I will tell you how it was---and is—for me. I grew
up in my grandmother’s farm In the village of Tos that lies At the foot of Mother Naka In the
Bameni hills of West Africa. We planted yams and corn and tobacco And the finest coffee grown
in the Cameroons. Our village was always happy and peaceful— A good place for boys and girls
to grow up. Then one peaceful night Before anyone alive remembers, Old Naka began to groan
and rumble and awoke from a long sleep! The villagers were frightened and ran out of their
houses and hid in the bushes at the foot of the mountain.

The COVID-19 pandemic has brought about stressful experiences and new difficult challenges
for Filipinos and citizens from all over the world as they needed to adapt to health protocols,
lockdowns, and quarantine community policies and grapple with financial difficulties.
Different people react differently to pandemic situations. In some challenging situations, some
people get sad. agitated, annoyed, and helpless; however, some can manage their emotions well
and channel their negative feelings or reactions into positive and productive activities. This may
not come naturally, but the good news is, it can be learned and honed over time.
Remember, life is 10% action and 90% reactions: Only you can make or break your day. See
how this statement relates to the poem below. Underline or highlight lines that are relevant to
you. Write your thoughts about them in your journal or share them with a friend, classmate, or
relative.
The World May Be Quiet but Not Sad

by R.A. Rivera

Shocked and sad, there I was

Inside our house, wondering when the restrictions will last
Instant vacation I thought it was 'til days turned weeks and weeks turned months
My school friends and teachers, I haven't seen I truly miss our summer outings and sun-kissed
skin
Months have passed and inside our house I'm still in.
My vacation is getting longer
My sadness growing stronger.
I long for my freedom, all I feel is boredom.
The world is quiet, the world is sad.
So I listened to my heart and talked to my mom and dad.
He said you're still a young lad, don't feel bad.
Nothing good will happen by staying so sad.

The Way We Live Is Different
Masks and gloves may be commonplace, depending on where in the world you live. Queuing is
now the norm, be it when visiting health professionals, going to the shops, or even getting in a
lift. Public transport looks very different, with social distancing in place and commuters wearing
masks and gloves.
We do a double-take when we hear someone cough, sneeze, or sniffle. We've been conditioned
these past few months to be hypervigilant for these symptoms. but hopefully, this might also
mean that higher standards of hand and personal hygiene will continue. We'll start to holiday
more in our backyards due to travel restrictions, which can only be a good thing for local
economies as they cope with the decline in overseas and Interstate tourist numbers. Wanderlust
for overseas exotic locations will also be on the rise, and Instagram will no doubt fuel those
desires.
Today, we are going to study about the connections and connectors.

C. Discussion
 Connector is a word that is used to express relationships and join ideas in sentences or
phrases.
Contrast Comparison Cause and Effect Time
