1 RESOLVE SYSTEM CONTAINS SEVERAL FORCES IN 2D

In general, if we have more than tow forces we can solve that

system of force by using basic concept, whatever we can say
after seen the figure below,

EXAMPLE 1.1. The force F has a magnitude of 600 N. Identify the x and y scalar components of F.

Solution.

Fx = 600cos 40 = 459.63 N →
Fy = 600sin 40 = 385.67 N 

EXAMPLE 1.2. Two forces of 100 N and 150 N are acting simultaneously at a point. What is the resultant
of these two forces, if the angle between them is 45°?

Practice. Two forces 20 N and 25 N are acting at a point with an angle of 60° between them. Find the magnitude and
direction of resultant.

EXAMPLE 1.3. Two forces of 375 N and 250 N are acting on a hook and passing through point O as
shown below. Determine magnitude and direction of resultant of these two forces.

EXAMPLE 1.4. Two forces act at an angle of 120°. The bigger force is of 40 N and the resultant is
perpendicular to the smaller one. Find the smaller force.

Practice. . Find the magnitude of the two forces, such that if they act at right angles, their resultant is 10 N . But if
they Act at 60°, their resultant is 13 N .

EXAMPLE 1.5. The two structural members, one of which is in tension and the other in
compression, exert the indicated forces on joint O. Determine the magnitude of the resultant R
of the two forces and the angle which R makes with the positive x-axis.
Solution.
Rx = −4cos 45 − 6cos15 = −8.62 kN
Ry = 4sin 45 − 6sin15 = 1.276 kN
R = Rx + Ry = 8.72 kN
Ry
