PTE TIPS

Focus on what the content is about, see the fill in the blank fits the part of the sentence first
understand the meaning of the word you are choosing if you don’t know the meaning try to do
elimination method, if it still doesn’t work then go for grammar and also see if it is a collocation
and choose correctly, don’t take too much time if you don’t find the blank go for next blank and
see the left out blank at last and don’t miss anything as it doesn’t have negative marking try to
answer all the blanks and time management is very important.

Learn new words as much as possible, Do vigorous practice on this section, it will improve you in
listening writing sections also. Listen to British English podcast at 2x or 1.5x speed and try to listen
it in 1x speed so you can find the difference and how much it helps, improve your vocabulary and
learn grammar tenses if possile for better understanding.

Spelling of the word plays a major role in this part and writing and listening section. Using capital
letters is also important need to know when to use and where to use.

Be fast in reading and writing at the same time practice more it helps you in listening and speaking
section.

Try to see the movies or series without subtitles on 1.5x speed, if you want to watch with subtitles
then practice read-aloud from that sentences you see on screen, and while watching or listening to

Read the newspapers and try to understand the context and grammar they are using and also
practice spellings, find new words and learn them, read fast and understand take the process

SOME RULES FOR USING PREPOSITIONS :

• We use ”To” or “For” with “–ing or a noun”

• Don’t use “With” with “being”.

• Use sorry ABOUT “something”.

• Use sorry FOR “doing something”.

• Use crazy ABOUT “something”.

• Use famous FOR “something”.

• In Time means soon enough to do something.

• On Time means punctual, not late


• Noun+preposition are used together(“ reason for,” cause of”)

• We use “in” for cars and taxis.

• We use “on” for bicycles and public transportation.

• Use “at” for an event. For example, at a party, at the movies

• Use “in” with towns and villages.

• Use “Until or till” to say how long situation continues.

• We use for+ a period of time to say how long something


goes on. For example, for two hours

• We use during+noun to say when something happens.(don’t use


during three days)

• Use while+subject+verb. For example, I fell asleep while


I(subject) was watching(verb) television.

• Use “at” with times.

• Use “on” with dates and days.

• Use “in” for longer periods of time.

• Don’t use “at/on/in” before “last” and “next”.


• “Despite” is used with a noun, a pronoun, or –ing. Always use
“Despite” without “of”.

 “Although” is used with a subject+verb. For


example, Although she smokes, although I had etc.

Rule 1: Have/has/had + past participle


tense (V3)
After have/has/had, choose the past participle of a verb with the form -ed or the third form.

Example:

You have been approved for admission.

He had repaired his old car.

I have baked some cookies.

Rule 2: Am/is/are/was/were + past


participle tense (V3)
After am/is/are/was/were, choose the past participle of a verb with the form -ed or the third form.

Example:

She was chased by animals in the forest.

Your dog is obsessed with bigger dogs.

However, the verb is sometimes the first form after is/am/are/was/were.

Example:

Jack was cutting the grass when a snake appeared.

My parents are going to a lake nearby for fishing.


Rule 3: Be/being/been+ past participle tense
(V3)
After be/been/being, choose the past participle of a verb with the form -ed or the third form.

Example:

This workshop has been held in the art gallery since last week.

Rule 4: Preposition ‘to’ + first form of the


verb (V1)
After the preposition “to”, choose a verb in the present or first form of the verb.

Example:

I decided to go to New York to visit my sister.

Rule 5: Preposition with, of, for, about +


verb-ing
After the prepositions ‘with’, ‘of’, ‘for’, and ‘about’ (except for ‘to’), use verbs ending in ‘-ing’.

Example:

Thanks for giving me a ride.

Rule 6: Articles a/an/the + noun


There are two types of articles:

 The definite article ‘The’


 The indefinite article ‘a’, ‘an’
‘A’ or ‘an’ usually comes before ‘the’ before the same noun in a paragraph.

Remember that nouns always come after articles. So, if the blank comes after a/an/the, you will quickly
identify the noun from the filling options.

Here are the 3 Article Rules:

1. “An” comes before words that begin with a vowel sound—five vowels” a, e, i, o, u.
Example: an egg, an apricot, an elephant

1. “A” comes before words that begin with consonants.


Example: a student, a building, a tree

1. ‘The’ comes before the noun forms of a word to indicate that the noun’s identity is known to
the reader.
Example: “I will read the book“. The speaker means a specific book.

Rule 7: Article a/an/the + adjective + noun


While rule 6 states that a/an/the goes with nouns, they may go with noun phrases (adjective + noun).

If there is a blank between an article and a noun, we will specify an adjective to fill in

Example: a tall building, a unique outfit

Rule 8: Modal verb + first form of the verb


can/ could/shall/should/may/might/will/ would/must/have to + first verb form

A modal verb (or modal auxiliary verb) expresses the certainty and uncertainty of action.

Example:

You must leave the danger zone.

I can complete the report within three hours.

He should see a dentist before his teeth get worse.

Rule 9: Many + Plural nouns


After ‘many’, look for a plural noun to fill in the blank. The plural form of a noun will always have “s or
es”.

Example:

Many students are waiting for the school bell.

He can speak many languages

Rule 10: It/which/that + Plural form of the


verb -s/-es
After it/ which/ that, you must fill in the blank with the plural form of the verb with -s or -es.
Example:

It takes a few months to finish the project.

He cooks a dish that has a distinctive French taste.

Rule 11: Conjunction rule


The verb form must be consistent before and after a conjunction

Example:

My family will go to Melbourne and settle there.

Re-order Paragraphs
 In re-order paragraphs, search for a headline and an idea.
 Arrange the sentences in a logical sequence, as there is one mark given for each
correct pair.
 Pronouns like he, she, they, them, those, I, we and us are not in the first
sentences.
 Check out the contradictory phrases and words such as however, but, although.
And, use additional phrases like also, moreover, furthermore, besides, on top
of that, etc.

Fill in the Blanks


 Fill in the blanks question type does not have negative marking, so answer all
questions.
 To fill in the missing words, focus on the parts of speech before and after the
text.
 Missing words will always have a synonym in the text.

If you want to follow your own essay template, try to use some fancy words , collocations,
punctuations, in the right order with good and simple grammar don’t complicate it.
