Technology - Panigale Race Damper

Overview:

1. The idea

1. The idea
December 2013 - I've been looking at the performance graphs of the 1199 for a while. If you've seen a few of them, it appears that the engine shows a reasonable dent in
power and torque between the 6000 and 7000. It now appears that the engine also gets quite warm under racing conditions. Many fellow Ducatists therefore replace the
dampers with the Termignoni's, Zards and Akrapovic's.

That is a fairly expensive affair if I may be honest. (Minimum €1100 for termi slipons, €3000 for a whole system) So time to do some research into alternatives. Initially I
was charmed by the Zard system. That is relatively easy to recreate as someone was willing to donate such a pipe to have it recreated. But then you also have to buy the
dampers and you soon end up at €1500.

Then I prefer the layout of the old system. Comparing the results a bit, the Akrapovic
system came out the best. But what does that system look like? And is it easy to recreate?
Another consideration was that there are now a fair number of original silencers for sale for
little. Can't you do something with that? Then you already have a large part of the system.

A person in the
US had opened
Number of visitors his silencers
and took a lot
of pictures of it.
The goal here
was actually
just to get more
sound out of
the engine, like
the drag pipes
of a Harley. Not
necessarily to
make capital
gains. But
because the
owner realized that an adjustment to the dampers also meant a re-mapping of the fuel, it turned out to be a nice bonus that the engine showed a better power curve. What
the person in question had done was take out the catalytic converter and remove the DB killer at the end.

By the way, a nice anecdote. An Australian person had purchased the racing exhaust from the American Austin Racing. BAKING with NOISE. (Almost no dampers!) but
little improvement in performance even after tuning. At least not according to the stated value of Austin Racing.

I was actually looking for the layout of the Akrapovics system, but at the time
of typing I couldn't really find it yet. I did find the Termignoni racing dampers
cut away. An article about these dampers also provided some more insight.
And I suspect that the akra's are not significantly different in construction.

In the Termi racing mufflers you see two perforated stainless steel pipes
running parallel from front to back ($15). At the front of the silencer (as it sits
on the motorcycle) you will see a 180 bend that connects the two pipes.
(30$) That is actually easy to copy and costs little. Then you still have to
connect the pipes to the exhaust hole and the inlet hole on the one hand.

It seems that the rear of the damper consists of a milled piece of aluminum,
which I also read somewhere. That's not super expensive either, plus minus
$50 each.

With all the welding you actually end up with about $200, so about €165.
You have to buy a spare set of original dampers for around €200/250. All in
all you have to end up with €415. .

Will there still be remapping? Well, it just so happens that I think the PCV for
the desmosedici is almost the same as for the 1199 and I still have one lying
around. So in a few months I will start working on this.....First do some more
research and hopefully find an openwork Akra.
