Liturgical Leaflet for an Active Participation in the Celebration of the Eucharist A A vy ZaS 2 February 2024 ENTATI a day dedicated to the ble: consecration to the Lord remine FTHEL A Life Vowedte God his year, the first Friday of February coin- cides with the Feast of the Presentation of Jesus in the Temple, and so we are invited to concentrate on Jesus, the Light ofall Nations. Chrisi the Light is the reason today is traditionally known as “Candelaria,” a day set aside for the blessing of candles. Today is the day when the “light of Christ” began to shine in a dark world, hence ing of candles that symbolize this truth. His us also of our own consecration to Him on the day of our baptism. Like Jesus, we too, are expected to live in an attitude of constant self-offering in the service of the Kingdom. Like Jesus, we too are expected to appreciate life and do our best to promote it in all its poten- tials, and to protect it from all attacks and whatever endangers or harms it As devotees of the Sacred Heart, in this Eucharist, let us renew our commitment to love life and to make amends for all the profanations and attacks it constantly ‘s. Let our blessed candles not remain mere symbols but let them become a fresh impetus to action. LITURGICAL NOTE Today the Eucharistic celebration is preceded by the blessing of the candles. This takes the place of the Penitential Rite. BLESSING OF CANDLES The blessing of the candles may be done in either of the following two ways: A. Blessing of Candles followed by Procession The faithful gather outside the church and light their candles while a suitable hymn is. sung. The priest celebrant greets them and explains briefly the meaning of the ceremony they are about io participate in and its relation- ship to Jesus, the “Light of revelation to the Gentiles and the glory of his people Israel.” Subsequently, he blesses the candles by re- citing one of the prescribed prayers, and sprin- kles the candles with holy water. Then the pro- cession into the church begins while the choir and the people sing the antiphon “Christ is the light of the nations and the glory of Israel, His people,” followed by the entrance hymn of the Mass. B. Blessing of Candles without Procession The faithful gather within the church and light their candles while a suitable hymn is sung. Standing in front of them, the celebrant greets the people, and explains to them the meaning of the ceremony. He then recites one of the prescribed prayers of blessing and sprinkles the candles with holy water. Imme- diately after, he proceeds to the altar while the antiphon indicated on the next page or an ap- propriate hymn is sung. After kissing the altar, he right away intones the “Gloria.” INT! Entrance Antiphon (To be recited only when no Entrance Hymn is sung.) Your merciful love, O God, we have received in the midst of your temple. Your praise, O God, like your name, reaches the ends of the earth; your right hand is filled with saving Greetings P-Grace and peace from God our Father, the Lord Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit be with you all. All~ And with your spirit! Gloria Collect (Opening Prayer) P -Almighty ever-living God, we humbly implore your maj- esty that, just as your Only Begotten Son was presented on this day in the Temple in the substance of our flesh, so, by your grace, we may be pre- sented to you with minds made pure. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever. All-Amen! 14 The prophet Malachi spoke of a “Messenger of the Cov- enant” who would come to the Temple to purify the Levites so that their worship might be acceptable to the Lord. The Church sees this prophecy fulfilled in Jesus, the Messen- ger and Author of the New Covenant. R —-Aproclamation from the Book of the Prophet Mal- achi Thus says the Lord God: Lo, | am sending my Messen- ger to prepare the way before me. And suddenly there will come to the temple the Lord whom you seek, and the Mes- senger of the Covenant whom you desire. Yes, he is coming, says the Lord of hosts. But who will endure the day of his coming? And who can stand when he appears? For heis like the refiner’s fire, or like the fuller’s lye. He will sit refining and purifying sil- ver, and he will purify the sons of Levi, refining them like gold or like silver that they may of- fer due sacrifice to the Lord. ‘Then the sacrifice of Judah and Jerusalem will please the Lord, as in the days of old, as in years gone by. ‘The Word of the Lord! All—Thanks be to God! Responsorial Psalm — Ps 24 R Whois the king of glory? isthe Lord! RM. Velez Ce tm © LS Who isthe king of glory? The Lord of hosts; he is the king of glory. R 2nd Reading Heb 2:14-18 In order to effectively inter- cede for all human beings and become their compassion- ate High Priest, God's Son needed to become a human being, totally similar to us in every aspect, except sin. This is what Jesus was and did, as the author of the Letter to the Hebrews states in today’s passage. R -Aproclamation from the Letter to the Hebrews Since the children share in blood and flesh, Jesus likewise shared in them, that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, thatis: the devil, and free those who through fear of death had been subject to slavery all their life. Surely he did not help an- gels but rather the deseen- dants of Abraham. There- fore, he had to become like his brothers and sisters in every that he might be a mer- ciful and faithful high priest before God to expiate the sins of the people. Because he himself was tested through what he suf- fered, he is able to help those who are being tested. The Word of the Lord! All-Thanks be to God! Gospel Acclamation Lk 2:32 AUl-Alleluia! All Gospel Lk 2:22-32 The basic purpose of God’s Son coming into the world was 10 offer himself in atonement for the sins of all mankind. His sacrificial offering, which culminated on Calvary, was foreshadowed in his presenia- tion in the Temple, forty days after his birth, as we read in today’s Gospel account. P ~The Lord be with you! All-And with your spirit!P =A proclamation from the holy Gospel accord- ing to Luke All-Glory to you, O Lord! When the days were com- pleted for their purification according to the law of Moses, Mary and Joseph took Jesus up to Jerusalem to present him tothe Lord, justas itis written in the law of the Lord, Every male that opens the womb shall be consecrated to the Lord, and 2 February 2024 to offer the sacrifice of a pair of turtledoves or two young pi- geons, in accordance with the dictate in the law of the Lord. Now there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon. He was righteous and devout, awaiting the consola- tion of Israel, and_ the Holy Spirit was upon him. It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not sce death before he had seen the Christ of the Lord. He came, led by the Spirit, into the temple; and when the parents brought in the child Jesus to perform the custom of the law in regard to him, Sime- on took him into his arms and blessed God, saying: “Now, Master, you may let your ser- vant go in peace, according to your word, for my eyes have seen your salvation, which you prepared in the sight of all the peoples, a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and glory for your people Israel.” The Gospel of the Lord! LITURGY OF THE WORD << Ist Reading Sh 7:1-4.6-7 Sufferings and frustrations are part and parcel of human life. Even good people suffer as the dramatic story of Job confirms. Unable to understand the cause of his trials, the poor man drew the pessimistic conclusions we read in today's passage. R —A proclamation from the Book of Job Job spoke, saying: Is not man’s life on earth a drudg- ery? Are not his days those of a hireling? He is a slave who longs for the shade, a hireling who waits for his wages. So haye been assigned months of misery, and troubled nights have been allotted to me. Ifin bed I say, “When shall Larise?” then the night drags on; Lam filled with restlessness until the dawn, My days are swifter than a weaver’s shuttle; they come to an end without hope. If I do so ingly, I haye a recompense, but then I have been entrusted with a stewardship. What then is my recom- pense? That, when I preach, I offer the gospel free of charge so as not to make full use of my right in the gospel. Although am free in regard to all, Ihave made myself a slave to all so as to win over as many as pos- sible. To the weak I became weak, to win over the weak. P ~A proclamation from the holy Gospel according to Mark All-Glory to you, O Lord! On leaving the synagogue Jesus entered the house of Si- mon and Andrew with: James and John. Simon’s mother-in- law lay sick with a fever. They immediately told him about her. He approached, grasped her hand, and helped her up. ‘Then the fever left her, and she waited on them. When it was evening, after sunset, they brought to Jesus all who were ill or possessed by demons. The whole town was gathered at the door. He cured many who were sick with vari- ous diseases, and he drove out many demons, not permitting them to speak because they knew him, Rising very early be- fore dawn, he left and went off to a deserted place, where he prayed. Simon and those who were with him pursued him and on finding him said, “Everyone is looking for you.” He told them, “Let us go on to the nearby villages that I may preach there also. For this pur- pose have I come.” So he went into their syna- gogues, preaching and driving out demons throughout the whole of Galilee. The Gospel of the Lord! All~Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ! Ware via FB Live @ DZRV 846 Facebook Pace ALL FOR THE SAKE OF THE GOSPEL Kalakbay at Katoto Tos. the Lord’s gospel message confronts us with a sense of ur gency. There is a little air of apparent compulsion as we hear the Lord say “Let us go on to the other villages, that I may preach there also, For this purpose have I come.” But this challenge is preceded by yet another paradox, an apparent contradiction in images, presented in the first reading by a figure of a tired and weary, complaining Job whose laments strike us to the core: “Is not man’s life a drudgery? Are not his days those of hirelings? He is a slave who longs for the shade, ahireling who waits for his wages?” Job would most likely have made a very good trial lawyer! His ar- gumentation is very cogent. His reasoning appears logical. And the cases he stands for are all very existential! They are all very real, and close to the experience of anyone who has seen suffering in any form. Will anyone please who has not suffered stand up? address myself to you who all long for respite from so much “sweat and care and cumber; sorrows passing number!” | address myself to you who, like Job, can identify with the slave who longs for the shade. 1 identify myself with thousands of Filipino fathers who, in their desire to give their children a brighter future, have endured, and I! endure, so many long years of absence from family and loved ones. I identify myself with even bigger numbers of mothers who often single-handedly try with might and main, to raise and educate a brood of impressionable young minds fast falling prey to the lure of social media and malls, and the allure of woke-ism and the siren songs of false narratives and fake news. | identify myself with forlorn and abandoned children of absentee parents who work abroad! Taddress this piece of good news to you in pain, you in sorrow, you who are siding with Job, you who seem to ask in the midst of so much darkness and uncertainty, “When shall [ arise? I then ask you to look at this other side of the picture ~ the proverbial resiliency of the Filipino, the almost unlimited capacity to endure, the admirable ability of the Filipino to bounce back, to come out the winner despite the odds! Today's good news rings loud and clear for us: God is close to the broken-hearted! Our response today, mind you, is not more of Job’s plaints and cries. Itis more like a Job renewed, a Job refreshed, a Job risen from misery, and a Job back on his feet of steadfast trust and faith in a God who “gives” and “takes away.” Praise the Lord, who heals the brokenhearted! How can a man like Job do this? What is behind all this turnaround? Read for yourself... Job’s problems were not undone. His arguments failed to reverse his long list of woes. His losses never came back. But there is one thing that happened to him who was honest and sincere enough to take his case to the God who is close to the broken- hearted. Enslaved by suffering and pain without him looking for them, he turned to the Lord and declared his helplessness. Praise the Lord who heals the broken-hearted! ‘Don Bosco Compound, A. Amaiz Ave.cor.
