Reflection Paper

International Humanitarian Law

The first discussion was presented by Professor Tabanao, the creation of International
Humanitarian law to prevent dehumanization acts of previous wars. The purpose of
implementing it is to avoid the brutality of killings, to lessen the use of extreme weapons during
wars that affect not just the combatants but also the civilians.
Professor Datumanong’s presentation discussed the means and method of warfare. He
gave the importance on how we treat people in a war zone by conducting the three principles,
protection, limitation and distinction. He outline the importance of the distinguishing between
lawful and lawful acts. He reminded us that the means and methods of warfare assimilated by
IHL lay in a vital goal and preserving the dignity of the individuals in the midst of the conflict
and the essential and principles of humanity.
Moreover, professor Kulintod’s discussion was the enlightenment the challenges and
complexities arise with IHL principles and the practice, particularly in conflict zones. We were
reminded of the importance of cooperation between states.
The last topic was presented by Prof. Tagorda, the exploring global citizenship in the
context of IHL. The professor’s discussion raises the important questions about the method of
responsibility that holds the principle of humanity, the dignity of individuals affected by the
entire conflict. She emphasize that global citizenship goes beyond national braveries. It means,
recognizing our shared responsibility to ensure that international humanitarian law is a field in all
corners of the world. Global citizenship in the context of IHL compels us to be aware of
suffering of others and take action in a most possible way.
In a globalized world were lots of conflict lies, national borders is extending the
awareness during distress to work together for our world peace, justice and respect for human
rights both in times of peace and war.
