Geologic Time Scale Activity Worksheet

The document discusses the geologic time scale and key events in Earth's history. It begins by asking questions about the age of Earth and the earliest eras. The three main eras from oldest to most recent are listed as the Precambrian Era from 4.6 billion to 541 million years ago, the Paleozoic Era from 541 million to 252 million years ago, and the Mesozoic Era from 252 million to 66 million years ago. Scientists determine when eras begin and end based on changes in fossil records. An activity asks the reader to place important events like the beginning of life and the extinction of dinosaurs on a geologic timeline.

1. How old is the Earth?

2. What was happening in the first 700my of the Earth forming?

3. What is the geologic time scale?

4. Name the 3 eras of geologic time in order from oldest to most recent. Then, indicate the time
span of each era to the right of that era. Some have been started for you.
____________________ Era = ___________________ years ago to ___________________ years ago
____________________ Era = ___________________ years ago to ___________________ years ago
____________________ Era = ___________________ years ago to present day

5. During which era did Pangaea begin to break up?

6. How do we learn about the history of the Earth? For example: How do we know that dinosaurs
really existed?

7. Just as your life’s history is broken up into sections, the history of the Earth is broken up into
smaller sections called eras. Your history can be broken up into sections and a labeled as birth,
elementary years, middle school years, high school years, professional years, etc. Since the
Earth’s history covers BILLIONS of years, it is broken up into sections called eras. How do scientists
determine when an era begins and when it ends?
8. If you had to make an educated guess as to when the following events took place, where would
you place them on this timeline? Place the letter on the timeline where you think the
corresponding event occurred.

T = Today
B = The Beginning of Time
D = Dinosaurs Became Extinct
R = The Oldest Known Rocks
H = First Humans
P = Precambrian Era Began
Pa = Paleozoic Era Began
M = Mesozoic Era Began
C = Cenozoic Era Began
