Petroelastic Properties
Petroelastic Properties
Crossplots are valuable tools for pattern recognition that can contribute to
reservoir characterization. In this sense, the VP/VS Vs DTCO and Poisson Vs
RHOB crossplots allow the identification of gas zones. VP/VS values less
than 1.75 are associated with the presence of gas. Laboratory data and
fluid substitution theories indicate that Poisson's ratio in gas-saturated
rock is in the range of 0 to 0.25. Unlike the density-neutron crossplot,
higher volume is investigated with these crossplots derived from acoustic
logs. This kind of analysis could be used as input data for seismic inversion
studies and to look for patterns associated with a specific behavior.
Principle
When water is replaced by low density gas in the pore space of a
reservoir rock, the rock density decreases while there is no change in
shear modulus. Liquid replacement which has large bulk modulus by gas,
which is very compressional, reduces the contribution of pore fluid to the
overall bulk modulus of the formation, and therefore, compressional
velocity of the acoustic wave decreases. Therefore Vp/Vs ratio will
decrease if water in the pore space is replaced with gas. VP/VS value is
expected to be less than 1.6. Laboratory data and fluid substitution
theories indicate that Poisson’s ratio in gas saturated sand lies between 0
to 0.25.

Gas zones recognition in source rock
Principio
