Information Literacy and Critical Inquiry

Information literacy and critical inquiry are integral components in health care. As a

nurse accessing and providing the appropriate information regarding health concerns is an

ongoing duty. The Registered Nurses’ Association of Ontario (RNAO,2012) best practice

guideline Facilitating Client Centered Learning states that it is the responsibility of nurses’ to

provide patient education to facilitate awareness and understanding of medical conditions to

improve health outcomes.

In our case study with John A. he states the overwhelming amount of information on the

web and his need for guidance to promote his learning. Using the best practice guideline and the

CRAAP tool I was able to select the website https://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/.

Using the best practice guideline, I used some of the recommendations to identify John’s

learning ability. The interaction was brief so I wanted to ensure the website I guided him to

would meet his literary abilities. In addition, I wanted the website to utilize different mediums of

communication, this particular website utilizes both written and visual mediums.

Applying the CRAAP tool I was able to review the website to ensure that the information

being provided was relevant and appropriate to the patients request for information. Working my

way through the tool I was able to evaluate how well the information met John’s needs. The

information was regularly updated, information was relevant and credible, and the purpose was

to educate and inform information seekers.

By utilizing these two sources in my search for a suitable website for John, I determined

the John Hopkins Medicine website was a good site to initiate his learning.
